A double substitution induced Ca(Mg0.8, Al0.2)(Si1.8, Al0.2)O6:Eu2+ phosphor for w-LEDs: synthesis, structure, and luminescence properties

Abstract: A double substitution induced blue-emitting phosphor Ca(Mg0.8, Al0.2)(Si1.8, Al0.2)O6:Eu(2+) (CMAS:Eu(2+)) was successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction process, and its structure and luminescence properties were investigated in detail. The crystal structure and chemical composition of the CMAS matrix were analyzed and determined based on Rietveld refinements and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). The composition-optimized CMAS:Eu(2+) exhibited a strong blue light, centered at 446 nm upon excitatio… Show more

“…This result can also be obtained from the Rietveld refinements between the CMSO host and the CMASO host. 12 Also, the coordination number of Ca 2+ ions is the same in these two hosts. Crystallographically, there is only one of Ca 2+ ion in the CMSO or CMASO.…”

“…The phosphors CMASO:Eu 2+ show some different properties, compared with CMSO:Eu 2+ , such as a higher luminescence efficiency and better thermal stability, which means the emission properties have been optimized. 12 However, the reason how the structure influencing the luminescence property was hardly discussed in detail. In this paper, the two aspects of work have been studied.…”

“…Alkaline earth silicate CaMgSi 2 O 6 is a suitable host compound for luminescence of lanthanide and transition metal ions because of high chemical stability and luminescence efficiency. In this paper, based on the systematical investigations on the vacuum ultraviolet–ultraviolet–visible (VUV–UV–vis) spectra of Ce 3+ - and Eu 2+ -doped CaMgSi 2 O 6 at cryogenic temperatures, the luminescence concentration-/thermal-quenching behaviors of Ce 3+ and Eu 2+ ions and the Ce 3+ → Eu 2+ energy transfer dynamics are discussed in detail. The possible applications of codoped samples in optical thermometry and anticounterfeiting are demonstrated.…”

“…Recently, white light emitting diodes (w-LED) have pointed to the huge potential of energy savings in solid state lighting applications [1][2][3][4]. Compared with the previous incandescent and fluorescent lamps, white light-emitting diodes have been considered to be the next-generation light sources having many advantages, including long operating lifetime, energy efficiency, small size, and energy-saving [5].…”
