A double‐mode cell to measure pitting and crevice corrosion

Abstract: Pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion of passivated steels were measured by using a double-mode syringe electrolyte cell built on an environment chamber. The setup, when set in noncontact mode, could measure pitting potentials and critical temperatures, and crevice corrosion potentials if in contact mode. It could be employed to distinguish the pitting and crevice corrosion damage of reinforcing steel in concrete. “…When studying the performance of batteries, especially automotive batteries, small environmental chambers are often used to simulate extreme environments. [108][109][110][111][112][113] The cooling performance, thermal insulation performance and startup performance in extreme environments are important indexes that could affect the safety and durability of batteries. Therefore, the application of environmental chamber to study the battery performance not only ensures the safety but also improves the utilization efficiency of resources.…”

“…The existence of crevice corrosion can strongly distort the measurement of pitting corrosion (Galvele, 2005). To avoid crevice corrosion and to ensure the accuracy of the pitting potential measurement, a double-model cell (DMC) device in this work was used in this study (Shen et al, 2019). The critical parts of the DMC are schematically illustrated in Figure 1.…”

“…A 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution (pH $ 6.8) was used as the corrosive electrolyte. A cathodic polarization potential À0.8 V was first applied to the electrode for 10 min using an electrochemical workstation (IVIUM-43228, Holland) to further clean the sample surface, then it was left at its open (Shen et al, 2019) circuit potential (OCP) for 10 min to reach its steady-state.…”

“…CC, with the insidiousness and perniciousness, which could result in a catastrophic structural damage in a relatively short time, has attracted extensive interest in the past few decades. [ 1–4 ] It has been realized that CC is diverse and its evolution depends upon the crevice geometry, material composition, and environmental factors, [ 5–8 ] which makes the CC more complicated.…”
