A dose-response evaluation of spray-dried yeast cell wall supplementation of diets fed to adult dogs: Effects on nutrient digestibility, immune indices, and fecal microbial populations1

Abstract: The yeast cell wall (YCW) preparation, Safmannan, was evaluated as a dietary supplement for adult dogs. Using a 5 x 5 Latin square design with 14-d periods, adult dogs cannulated in the terminal ileum were supplemented with 0, 0.05, 0.25, 0.45, or 0.65% YCW based on daily food allowance. Apparent ileal nutrient digestibility responded cubically (P = 0.07 to 0.10) to YCW supplementation. Ileal nutrient digestibility tended (P = 0.09) to be greater with YCW supplementation compared with control. Apparent total t… Show more

“…In this study, leukocyte counts in peripheral blood were decreased in lactulosetreated calves and monocyte numbers were decreased in both treatment groups. A similar effect has been found when mannanoligosaccharides were fed to dogs (Middelbos et al, 2007). In addition, the expression of IL2RA -an activation marker on the surface of lymphocytes -tended to be lowered in the colon of lactulose-treated calves compared with the control.…”

“…Fleige et al (2009) found a similar lowering of its expression in the mesenteric lymph nodes of lactulose-treated calves. Middelbos et al (2007) suggested that a lowering of the infectious load in the intestine due to the feeding of mannan moieties may decrease the necessity of activated immune cells in the vicinity. This may also be reflected in peripheral blood.…”

“…The microbial population within the gut was determined by quantitative, real-time PCR based on a method as described by Middelbos et al (2007) with minor modifications. Briefly, genomic DNA was isolated from the ileum contents (stored at −80°C) using a DNA extraction kit (QIAamp DNA Stool Mini Kit, Qiagen, Valencia, CA; Faber et al, 2012) according to the manufacturer's instructions.…”

“…For instance, Field et al (1999) reported that the fermentable fibres altered the canine gutassociated lymphoid tissue composition and activity, but no changes were noted in blood. It has been suggested that the full benefit of prebiotic supplementation may not be detectable unless the immune system is challenged during supplementation (Middelbos et al, 2007a). There is evidence that the feeding of FOS increased the mucosal dendritic cell function associated with immune system in patients with Crohn's disease (Lindsay et al, 2006).…”
