This paper provides insight to the dynamics that come with the emergence of IoT in the furniture and kitchen manufacturing industry. By implementing the concept of IoT companies are currently evaluating how internal knowledge and skillsets correspond to the new technical requirements that the emerging digital setting outlines and by directing internal research they are learning more about IoT and connected products as they proceed. One current major problem is that there are no open protocols that can connect all products regardless of supplier. Nevertheless, implementation of IoT does not solely involve technical aspects and companies are also faced with the dilemma on how to design and develop corresponding commercial processes. To this point early product implementations have arrived on the consumer markets and the future vision is to achieve full integration that imbeds connectivity and interaction among all products in the home.

Abstract-The Web of Things research activities consist essentially in developing concepts, tools and systems for creating and operating global networks of devices associated with embedded resources -RFID tags, sensors, actuators and even complex computing facilities -, which are accessed by services. In that context, one of the most accepted standardization technique in order to seamlessly integrate this potentially huge set of heterogeneous services consists in RESTifying them. This operation is rather straightforward for "quickly computed" services such as Flickr photo service, Google Maps or Twitter. But what about cleanly integrating delayed, possibly decomposable services, such as a parcel delivery service computing first the partitions of parcels to various tours and then, for each tour, the optimal routing respecting additional constraints?We claim that this question represents an important challenge if one desires to enrich the potentialities of the web of things. In order to best contribute to its solution, this paper first tackles the problematic of RESTifying decomposable delayed services in a generic way. Secondly, it proposes a general architecture and validates it with a case study including a prototypical implementation.

Much has been said about the benefits that the Internet of Things (IoT) will bring to citizens' life. Countless smart objects will be soon offering autonomous behavior in smart environments by sensing the physical world around us, collecting information about us, and taking proactive actions (many times without our consent) with the ultimate goal of improving our wellness. Without a strong guarantee on user privacy, the IoT may sound scary for many citizens. Indeed, the IoT-Architecture Reference Model (IoT-ARM) is a European effort for promoting IoT quality aspects such as security and privacy. This paper paves the way to the adoption of reference architectures by describing the application of the IoT-ARM within a European-funded project, SMARTIE. The SMARTIE architecture has been designed to empower citizens to take control of their IoT devices and privacy, while guaranteeing scalability for large deployments in smart cities.
