Projected light patterns are used to induce electrohydrodynamic instabilities in a polymer thin film sandwiched between two electrodes. Using this optically induced electrohydrodynamic instability (OEHI) phenomenon, we have successfully demonstrated rapid, microscale patterning of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) pillar arrays on a thin-film hydrogenated amorphous silicon layer on top of an indium titanium oxide glass substrate. This glass substrate is the bottom electrode in a two-electrode, parallelplate capacitor configuration with a micron-scale gap. Within this gap are a thin film of spin-coated PDMS and a thin layer of air. Primary pillar growth is first observed within 5-90 s in the dark regions of the projected patterns and pillar growth eventually spreads to the illuminated regions when the initial PDMS thickness is \2 lm. Experimental data characterizing the change in pillar diameters (between 15 and 30 lm in diameter) show that they can be decoupled from the inter-pillar spacing (maintaining a constant *84 lm pitch between pillar centers) by controlling the applied DC voltage (between 110 and 210 V). Experimental results also show the importance of the optically induced lateral electric field on controlling pillar formation. This OEHI method of rapid pillar generation, with voltage control of the pillar diameter and control of pillar position via projected light patterns, presents new opportunities for low cost, efficient, and simple fabrication of micro, and perhaps nanoscale, polymer structures that could be used in many bioMEMS applications.

Thermally-actuated, phase change flow control for microfluidic systems

An easy to implement, thermally-actuated, noninvasive method for flow control in microfluidic devices is described. This technique takes advantage of the phase change of the working liquid itself-the freezing and melting of a portion of a liquid slug-to noninvasively close and open flow passages (referred to as a phase change valve). The valve was designed for use in a miniature diagnostic system for detecting pathogens in oral fluids at the point of care. The paper describes the modeling, construction, and characteristics of the valve. The experimental results favorably agree with theoretical predictions. In addition, the paper demonstrates the use of the phase change valves for flow control, sample metering and distribution into multiple analysis paths, sealing of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) chamber, and sample introduction into and withdrawal from a closed loop. The phase change valve is electronically addressable, does not require any moving parts, introduces only minimal dead volume, is leakage and contamination free, and is biocompatible. [1] Micromodels have been increasingly employed in various ways in porous media research, to study the pore-scale behavior of fluids. Micromodels have proven to be a valuable tool by allowing the observation of flow and transport at the micron scale in chemical, biological, and physical applications. They have helped to improve our insight of flow and transport phenomena at both microscale and macroscale. Up to now, most micromodels that have been used to study the role of interfaces in two-phase flow were small, square, or nearly square domains. In this work, an elongated PDMS micromodel, bearing a flow network with dimensions 5Â30 mm 2 was manufactured. The pore network was designed such that the REV size was around 5Â7 mm 2 . So, our flow network was considered to be nearly four times the REV size. Using such micromodels, we established that the inclusion of interfacial area between the wetting and the nonwetting fluids models the hysteretic relationship between capillary pressure and saturation in porous media. In this paper, we first present the procedure for manufacturing PDMS micromodels with the use of soft lithography. Then, we describe an innovative and novel optical setup that allows the real-time visualization of elongated samples. Finally, we present the results obtained by quasi-static, two-phase flow experiments.
