A displaced stress fracture of the femoral neck in an adolescent female distance runner with female athlete triad: A case report

Abstract: This report presents a case of a displaced stress fracture of the femoral neck in an adolescent female distance runner with amenorrhea. Both reduction and internal fixation were performed early after the injury. At 24 months postoperatively, magnetic resonance imaging and bone scintigraphy showed no positive signs of femoral head necrosis and bone union was confirmed on plain X-ray. A medical examination for the presence of the signs of the female athlete triad by checking weight, calorie intake and menstrual … Show more

“…Current understanding suggests that bone stress injuries not identified and managed appropriately can progress to a more serious fracture, 18,22,23,31,32,44 and preventive strategies, including the identification and modification of risk factors, may help prevent the progression to a frank fracture. 22,32 Historically, radiographs and radionuclide bone scans have been the standard diagnostic tools used to assess and diagnose bone stress injuries.…”

“…In adolescence, such uncoupling of the rates of bone resorption and formation prevents girls from accruing as much bone mass as other girls . The resulting bone loss predisposes women to stress fractures (Goolsby, Barrack, & Nattiv, 2012;Okamoto, Arai, Hara, Tsuzihara, & Kubo, 2010;Popp et al, 2009) in the near term and to the premature onset of osteoporosis later in life.…”
