Autistic children are increasingly a focus of technology research within the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community. We provide a critical review of the purposes of these technologies and how they discursively conceptualise the agency of autistic children. Through our analysis, we establish six categories of these purposes: behaviour analysis, assistive technologies, education, social skills, therapy and well-being. Further, our discussion of these purposes shows how the technologies embody normative expectations of a neurotypical society, which predominantly views autism as a medical deficit in need of 'correction'. Autistic children-purportedly the beneficiaries of these technologies-thus become a secondary audience to the largely externally defined purposes. We identify a lack of design for technologies that are geared towards the interests, needs and desires of autistic children. To move HCI's research into autism beyond this, we provide guidance on how to consider agency in use and explicitly allow for appropriation beyond externally driven goals. Η ψηφιακή αφήγηση (ΨΑ) είναι μια σχετικά νέα τάση που ενσωματώνεται στην εκπαιδευτική πραγματικότητα μέσω έντονης ερευνητικής δραστηριότητας την τελευταία περίπου δεκαετία και στον Ελληνικό χώρο. Η πρόσφατη πανδημία δημιούργησε μια νέα πραγματικότητα στον εκπαιδευτικό χώρο που βρήκε τους εκπαιδευτικούς να προσπαθούν να προσαρμοστούν σε αυτή και να καταφεύγουν σε ένα συνδυασμό τηλεδιασκέψεων και ανάρτησης φύλλων εργασίας για τους μαθητές. Η ανάγκη για επιμόρφωση σε εναλλακτικές προσεγγίσεις τηλεδιδασκαλίας ανέκυψε πιο έντονη από ποτέ. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, η ΨΑ φαίνεται να αποτελεί μια δυναμική προσέγγιση που μπορεί εξίσου επιτυχημένα να εφαρμοστεί σε συνθήκες εξ αποστάσεως εκπαίδευσης, σύγχρονης ή/και ασύγχρονης μορφής. Η παρούσα εργασία εξετάζει αυτή τη δυνατότητα, είτε αφορά στην προσέγγιση δημιουργίας ψηφιακών ιστοριών από τον εκπαιδευτικό είτε από τους μαθητές.

Concepts utilizing applied ethics, such as responsible conduct of research (RCR), can prove difficult to teach due to the complexity of problems faced by researchers and the many underlying perspectives involved in such dilemmas. To address this issue, we created Academical, a choice-based interactive storytelling game for RCR education that enables players to experience a story from multiple perspectives. In this paper, we describe the design rationale of Academical, and present results from an initial study comparing it with traditional web-based educational materials from an existing university RCR course. The results highlight that utilizing a choicebased interactive story game is more effective for RCR education, with learners developing significantly higher engagement, stronger overall moral reasoning skills, and better knowledge scores for certain RCR topics.
