Abstract-Conventional database systems are designed for managing textual and numerical data, and retrieving such data is often based on simple comparisons of text/numerical values. However, this simple method of retrieval is no longer adequate for the multimedia data, since the digitized representation of images, video, or data itself does not convey the reality of these media items. In addition, composite data consisting of heterogeneous types of data also associates with the semantic content acquired by a user's recognition. Therefore, content-based retrieval for multimedia data is realized taking such intrinsic features of multimedia data into account. Implementation of the content-based retrieval facility is not based on a single fundamental, but is closely related to an underlying data model, a priori knowledge of the area of interest, and the scheme for representing queries. This paper surveys recent studies on content-based retrieval for multimedia databases from the point of view of three fundamental issues. Throughout the discussion, we assume databases that manage only nontextual/numerical data, such as image or video, are also in the category of multimedia databases.

As the availability of digital video becomes commonplace, a shift in application focus will occur from merely accessing video as an independent data stream to embedding video with other multimedia data types into coordinated hypermedia presentations. The migration to embedded video will present new demands on applications and support environments: processing of any one piece of video data will depend on how that data relates to other data streams active within the same presentation. This article describes presentation, synchronization and interaction control issues for manipulating embedded video. First, we describe the requirements for embedded video, contrasted against other forms of video use. Next we consider mechanisms for describing and implementing the behavior of embedded video segments relative to other data items in a document; these relationships form the basis of implementing cooperative control among the events in a presentation. Finally, we consider extending the possibilities for tailoring embedded video to the characteristics of the local runtime environment; this forms the basis for adaptive, application-level quality of service control of a presentation. In all cases, we describe a mechanism to externalize the behavior of hypermedia presentations containing resource intensive data requirements so that effective control can be implemented by low-level system facilities based on application-specific requirements. We present our results in terms of the CMIFed authoring/ presentation system.

Abstract:In this paper a video data model that allows efficient and effective representation and querying of spatio-temporal properties of objects is presented. The data model is focused on the semantic content of video streams. Objects, events, activities performed by objects are main interests of the model. The model supports fuzzy spatial queries including querying spatial relationships between objects and querying the trajectories of objects. The model is flexible enough to define new spatial relationship types between objects without changing the basic data model. A prototype of the proposed model has been implemented. The prototype allows various spatio-temporal queries along with the fuzzy ones and it is prone to implement compound queries without major changes in the data model.
