A Digital Method to Fabricate the Ocular Portion of An Orbital Prosthesis with A Smartphone Camera, Color Calibration and Digital Printing

Abstract: Conventional techniques described in the literature for the manufacture of ocular prostheses are time‐consuming since they involve manual work. The use of technologies could improve this laborious process, providing better esthetic outcomes. This technique describes how to manufacture the ocular portion of an orbital prosthesis using a smartphone camera, color calibration with a tooth shade guide, and digital printing. This method allows clinicians to fabricate customized ocular prosthesis by using a photograp… Show more

“…With conventional technique fabrication time ranges from 6 to 10 h and painting process takes high percent of this time. 13,16,[19][20][21] Color selection in paper iris disc and black iris disc techniques evidently requires skill. This technique neither takes long time nor requires the necessary skill as it does in the painting technique.…”

“…The ultraviolet light entering the clinics alter the chemical bonds of the colorants present within the gray card and introduce color shifts otherwise not seen in a windowless setup [ 44 ]. In said instances, a color temperature conversion filter or diffuser have been suggested to remove unwanted reflections and glares [ 11 , 39 , 45 ] by remapping the color values based on the ambient color temperature in real time and adjusting to the temperature variations seen throughout the day; a moderately overcast sky has a color temperature of 6500–8000 K whereas the temperature in a closed room/studio photography varies between 2500–3500 K.…”

“…The ocular prosthesis or epiprosthesis placed on top of the orbital implant covered by conjunctival or mucosal lining is generally formed using manual techniques of casting and drawing. Conventional techniques for the manufacture of ocular prostheses are manual and time-consuming; latest advancements include computer-assisted modeling and design and customized 3-dimensional printing using digital scans to replicate the natural ocular surface structure and appearance, and more 22–24 . Although promising, digital advancements are still used to produce selective intermediate products only in few clinics because of their costs and complexity.…”
