A Different Point of View of Glutathione Peroxidase: its Relationship to the Metabolic Changes Associated with Nutritional Management in Assaf ovine breed

Abstract: SummaryWe considered the role played by selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in relation to the metabolic changes due to nutritional management in a flock ofthe Assaf breed in Spain, housed in an intensive management system. Our objective was to examine the relationship between the nutritional management of this flock during different productive stages and GSH-Px. The modifications of ASAT and CK activities, closely connected to the pathological changes in GSH-Px values, were also recorded. The a… Show more

“…This fact itself can justify the differences found in LOOH values between groups, although we cannot exclude the influence of diet at this moment on this parameter. In ruminant nutrition, this kind of diet, rich in essential fatty acids, has adverse effects like the increased conversion of polyunsaturated fatty acids, derived from essential fatty acids, to lipid peroxides (HUSVÉTH et al, 2000;CASTILLO et al, 2001b). But normally the body is protected by a wide range of antioxidant systems that neutralise harmful oxidants (NEMEC et al, 2000).…”

“…Antioxidants protect biological molecules from damages occurring either in physiologic conditions or upon exposure to the action of oxidative compounds. Dietary antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and E, and selenium are an important component of antioxidative protection (Temple 2000, Castillo et al 2001, Kolodziej & Jacyno 2005, Balicka-Ramisz et al 2006. Selenium is taken to the body with food in its organic (selenomethionine, selenocysteine) or inorganic (selenates, selenites) form.…”

“…On the other hand, in a study performed on Black Bengal goats authors did not find correlation with reproductive traits and K e concentration (MANDAL et al, 1988). Concentration of GSH has also important role on some productivity traits (CASTILLO et al, 2001;BALICKA-RAMICZ et al, 2006). In the present experiment, GSH H type Awassi sheep had higher milk production capacity and lower fleece weight.…”

“…An integral component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase is selenium. The physiological function and peroxidant role of this enzyme have been precisely determined (SZILAGYI et al, 1994;CASTILLO et al, 2001;KOLEDZIEJ et al, 2005). In some sheep breeds, levels of GSH show a distinct bimodal distribution and as potassium and sodium concentrations it is possible to divide animals into two groups according to their erythrocyte GSH concentrations.…”
