A Development Framework Enabling the Design of Service-Based Cloud Applications

Abstract: Cloud application platforms gain popularity and have the potential to change the way applications are developed, involving composition of platform basic services. In order to enhance the developer's experience and reduce the barriers in the software development, a new paradigm of cloud application creation should be adopted. According to that developers are enabled to design their applications, leveraging multiple platform basic services, independently from the target application platforms. To this end, this p… Show more

“…Defining "application portability" is essential before finding any solutions for it. Therefore, the literature was explored to retrieve the most appropriate definitions, which also revolve around PaaS portability [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] (although PaaS portability may involve much more than application portability). "Application portability" is the ease with which an application developed on one platform may be transferred and reused on another forum or different infrastructures within a cloud.…”

“…Independent tools and frameworks have emerged with the goal of integrating, under a single interface, the services of multiple public and private providers (see, e.g., [3], and [4]). In a very short time, these platforms have evolved according to the mode in which developers can take advantage of integrated cloud services to expose and run their systems.…”

“…The heterogeneity mainly arises from (i) the variability in the workflow required to complete an operation [5] and (ii) the differences in the web API through which the service providers provision their services. This paper focuses on the latter variability point.…”
