Background: Spare parts warehousing in the oil and gas industry is essential for offshore production. With the introduction of Industry 4.0 and its subsequent technological tools, new functions are enabled in industrial logistics activities. Efficiency, visibility, optimization, and productivity are often mentioned as benefits of successful Industry 4.0 technology implementation in logistics activities. In this paper, the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in spare parts warehousing in the oil and gas industry is studied. Method: 133 peer-reviewed journal publications indexed in Scopus and Web of Science are analyzed in a systematic literature review. The review is structured as frequency and content analysis. Aim: As there is limited research on this specific topic, the aim is for this paper to be a theoretical foundation that assists the industry with future solutions. Results: The list of benefits of implementation gathered from the literature is comprehensive. However, the list of challenges is particularly pertinent to the oil and gas industry and indicates a strong inclination towards limited and controlled implementation of some technologies. The safety demands of the industry mean there are many limitations to implementation currently. Conclusions: This paper reflects on the results, identifies research gaps, and gives proposals for future research.

SummaryThis paper proposes an IoT‐enabled soil monitoring system using wireless sensor network for automatic irrigation in agricultural applications, especially for lemongrass plants, where an automated control system is required for irrigation applications. This can solve the problem of the water crisis, which is faced by the farmers during the cultivation of the crop in the field. This controls the water supply in the irrigation process using an IoT communication system. A system architecture for soil monitoring and controlling irrigation using IoT technique is designed where the different sensors and actuators like humidity, soil moisture, temperature, pump, and so forth are connected with a node microcontrol unit and message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol for enhancing communication capabilities. This wireless sensor network gives feedback to the system. This provides automation by the on/off pump system during drip irrigation. The sensor data are displayed on a PC or mobile phone through wireless communication and an IoT cloud platform. An experimental testing setup is developed and the experimental performance of a soil monitoring system using IoT technique for automatic drip irrigation has been carried out and soil moisture data are also stored in a cloud server for analytics. The performance shows that the MQTT protocol sends data within 48 s to the IoT cloud so that the data can be acquired in a faster manner. This shows that this kind of soil monitoring system is suitable for automatic drip irrigation, which enhances the farming process and overcomes the water crises in the agricultural system by reducing the wastage of water.

Traceability System of Sand Core in Casting Production with a Digital-Twin Core Rack

In recent development of casting traceability, it has been noticed that many casting manufacturing processes that involve the use of sand cores often lack proper traceability back to the cores used in their production and the supporting production information. Most marking symbols applied to sand cores using existing marking methods not only exhibit unstable code readability but also pose critical risks to the surface quality of sand cores. In response, we developed and tested a digital-twin core rack aimed at transferring digital codes to sand cores without contact with their surfaces. By utilizing infrared sensors for real-time object detection, the core rack can transfer digital identical codes from the core-making machine to the core rack, and subsequently to the casting machine. This digital code encompasses all relevant process data of a sand core, from core making to de-coring. Moreover, the various sensors embedded in the core rack were designed to monitor air humidity, temperature, and vibration events during the transport and storage of the cores. These parameters are especially critical for maintaining the quality of inorganic sand cores. The study demonstrates the successful application of each component within this conceptual framework. Looking ahead, it is imperative to update the hardware of this concept to ensure its adaptation to the demanding conditions of an industrial environment.
