A detailed radiographic description and correlated magnetic resonance imaging findings of an infrequently identified articular indentation of the articular margin of the distal phalanx

Abstract: Summary Background Equine veterinarians frequently obtain lateromedial radiographs of the feet. During assessment, one infrequently encounters a triangular‐shaped articular indentation of the articular surface of the distal phalanx (P3). To the authors’ knowledge, there are no detailed radiographic or MRI descriptions of this specific articular indentation in the literature so far. Objectives The main purpose of this study was to give a detailed morphological description of this radiographical identified artic… Show more

“…A rarely identified axial articular indentation of the proximal articular margin of P3 with concomitant OCLL (type 3 OCLL) was recently described in detail (Figure 1). 16 This specific type 3 OCLL was typically found in the palmar third of the proximal articular margin of P3. The exact position (dorsal, middle or palmar) of the underlying and communicating OCLLs varied between horses.…”

“…Multiple types of OCLLs of the distal phalanx (P3) have been described, such as extensor process, collateral ligament associated, distal sesamoidean impar ligament and centrally located OCLLs 9,11,16–18 . The exact prevalence and distribution of OCLLs of distal phalangeal cysts between fore‐ (FLs) and hindlimbs (HLs) remains unclear to date 13,16 .…”
