A Design of Experiment (DOE) Analysis of the Performance of Uplink Real-Time Traffic over a 3G Network

Abstract: The bandwidth and reliability of the reverse link (or uplink) as the performance metrics of real-time traffic are studied in this paper. A two-level full factorial Design of Experiment (DOE) was conducted to identify the impact on the bandwidth and reliability of four factors: packet size, data streaming rate, time of the day, and buffer size in a real network environment. Two extreme cases for each factor were tested and statistical analysis is performed to characterize how different factors and their interac… Show more

“…The cards used in our tests are a Sierra Wireless AirCard 597A and a KPC680 ExpressCard, both based on CDMA/HDR [4] or EV-DO. The EV-DO systems employ adaptive techniques (such as modulation schemes, forward error correction codes, and packet sizes), thus providing different bandwidth and delays depending on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measured at the mobile user.…”

“…In wireless applications such as Mobile Health systems, the QoS is critical. It is therefore important to understand how different factors affect QoS (e.g., reliability and delays), which is determined mainly by the uplink transmission characteristics [4]. The performance of an uplink 3G system for Mobile Health application is studied in [14] using the OPNET simulation tool.…”

“…Design of experiment (DOE) analysis has been widely applied to improving product performance [10], as for example, in numerous recent reliability studies: DOE makes it possible to explore multiple stressors in an efficient way for reliability improvement considering the no fault found (NFF) phenomenon [26]; a two-level full factorial DOE may identify the reliability of the reverse link as the performance metric of real-time traffic [12]; a DOE based parameter tuning is proposed to provide an estimation of turbine power plant availability [3]; a two factorial DOE analysis based on the cost associated with maintenance and replacement activities and reliability characteristic parameters is used to determine the optimal preventive maintenance and replacement schedules in repairable and maintainable systems [19]; a two-level, three-factor experiment is used to collect human performance data under different mustering conditions [20].…”
