A Design-Centric Activity-Based Cost Estimation Model for PCB Fabrication

Abstract: Electronic products are built in a competitive environment that demands constant miniaturization, increased functionality of each new generation of products, and compressed design cycles in order to be the first to market with a new product. One repercussion of these business conditions is the designer often does not have time to adequately explore all the design alternatives and select the best alternative. Tools are needed to aid the designer in evaluating the design early in the product development phase. O… Show more

“…The second technological challenge is in predicting purchasing cost and in-house manufacturing cost. Part costs need to be predicted for new parts that have never been produced before (Fernandez et al, 2005; Giachetti and Arango, 2003; Mauchand et al, 2008; Watson et al, 2006).…”

“…Table 7 illustrates some of the technology challenges for our example. [12,14,33,47,51] To ensure that the new system will actually improve performance, performance measures need to be identified. The application of performance assurance principles through-out all phases and levels of manufacturing help ensure that the manufacturing processes meet their intended functional requirements while providing necessary feedback for continuous improvement.…”

“…[13] presents the design and implementation of a customizable cost integration tool to support design time optimization that considers cost as an objective function or constraint. Giachetti and Arango [14] reported an activity-based printed circuit board (PCB) cost estimation model. The proposed model estimates PCB cost based on the design parameters.…”
