A Descriptive Study of the Types and Survival Patterns of Saudi Patients with Multiple Primary Solid Malignancies: A 30-Year Tertiary Care Center Experience

Abstract: Background and Objective: Cancer survival has improved significantly, which reflects the achievements in screening, diagnosis, and treatment. As a consequence, multiple primary malignancies are diagnosed more frequently, with an incidence ranging from 0.52–11.7%. The types of malignancy that coexist and survival patterns vary notably in different countries and geographical areas. Due to the limited literature in Saudi Arabia, a baseline of prevalent malignancy combinations and their survival patterns would sup… Show more

“…The study of this case may provide useful information regarding the diagnosis and treatment of patients with similar conditions. We concluded the following points ( 1 ): Clinicians must keep in mind that patients with multi-organ simultaneous lesions may suffer from MPM ( 2 ). We suggest a scrupulous biopsy of suspicious lesions in patient with multiple lesions of different organs to improve the diagnostic accuracy ( 3 ).…”

“…MPM are classified as synchronous when tumors are diagnosed within 6 months of each other, otherwise as metachronous ( 1 ). Metachronous presentation is more frequent than synchronous, with a ratio of about 2-4 ( 2 , 3 ). MPM mainly involve breast, lung, prostate, and melanoma.…”

“…Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is the most common hematological malignancy, accounting for approximately 2.8% of new cancer cases and 2.6% of cancer-related deaths worldwide in 2020 [1][2][3]. Advances in screening, prevention, diagnosis, and therapeutics have significantly increased the life expectancy and survival of cancer patients, which also increases the risk of developing second primary malignancies (SPMs) [4]. Previous evidence suggests a significant increase in the risk of SPM including NHL after NHL due to improved survival in recent years [5,6], which has gradually become an important cause of mortality in addition to primary tumors [7].…”
