A description of the ABCD organizational structure and communication framework

Abstract: The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study is designed to be the largest study of brain development and child health in the United States, performing comprehensive assessments of 11,500 children repeatedly for 10 years. An endeavor of this magnitude requires an organized framework of governance and communication that promotes collaborative decision-making and dissemination of information. The ABCD consortium structure, built upon the Matrix Management approach of organizational theory, facilitates… Show more

“…To address the causes of excessive adolescent drinking, the National Institutes of Health has funded longitudinal research in youth to track which factors may predispose adolescents to binge drink. The National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) (Brown et al., ) and the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (ABCD) (Auchter et al., ) are 2 large, multisite projects that aim to pinpoint environmental, social, and other factors that lead to drinking and drug use in adolescents. However, factors that predict alcohol use in humans can confound determination of the consequences of binge drinking, another major aspect of the public health issue and a question that can be systematically examined by modeling binge exposure in rodents that controls alcohol exposure across development.…”

“…ABCD recruits approximately 10, 000 9-10 years old children. Longitudinal measures of the brain structure and function as well as rich behavior measures and genetic factors are collected across 21 sites in the United States [Auchter et al, 2018]. Imaging Data and Preprocessing: The ABCD imaging protocol is harmonized for three types of 3T scanners: Siemens Prisma, General Electric (GE) 750 and Philips.…”
