A description of commonly observed behaviors for the kori bustard (Ardeotis kori)

Abstract: The kori bustard {Ardeotis kori), a large ground-dwelling bird found in southern and eastern Africa, is declining throughout its entire range. We present an ethogram of the kori bustard in which we describe 63 individual behaviors. These behaviors are grouped into ten categories: resting, comfort/maintenance, locomotion, ingestive/excretory, antagonistic, inter-specific response, sexual, maternal, vocalizations and miscellaneous. The precise descriptions of kori bustard behaviors presented here provide a stand… Show more

“…25,26,29,31,36 During the course of treatment, the chemotherapy was suspected to have suppressed the bird's testosterone levels, thereby preventing it from developing the weight gain and vocalization behaviors typical of the breeding season. 5,6 Cyclophosphamide has been shown to have a negative effect on testis and epididymal weight, as well as to decrease serum luteinizing hormone and testosterone levels in mice. 37 Furthermore, a reversible decrease in spermatogenesis and sperm motility has been documented in both mice and people undergoing treatment with cyclophosphamide.…”

“…The easiest lands to convert are those with already open canopies and sparse vegetation, which are the same as those shown to be used by Kori Bustards. Kori Bustards are known to have low tolerance for human activity and would most likely avoid areas of agriculture and human development instead of adapting to the change in habitat (Herremans 1998, Osborne and Osborne 2001, Lichtenberg and Hallager 2008.…”

“…The species is considered near threatened on the IUCN Red List (BirdLife International 2016) and the South African red data book classifies Kori Bustards as vulnerable (Brooke 1984). Kori Bustards' low tolerance of human activity and their low reproduction rates during dry years have compounded these declining population trends (Herremans 1998, Osborne and Osborne 2001, Lichtenberg and Hallager 2008. Other threats to the species include collisions with powerlines (Martin andShaw 2010, Shaw et al 2010), poaching, and predation (Senyatso et al 2013).…”

“…[24,25], the behaviours reported in this paper were compiled from several sources. In order to assess as many of the behaviours shown by giraffes as possible, numerous peer-reviewed articles, dissertations and theses, and other publications (Appendix), focussing on descriptions of giraffe behaviour or at least partly addressing the topic, were reviewed for behavioural descriptions and definitions e.g.…”
