A Dense and CO Free Benzene Structure on Rh(111)

Abstract: The adsorption of benzene on Rh(lll) was investigated by using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), and angle-resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (ARUPS).Under very good vacuum conditions we found a (\/l9 x \/l9)R23.4°pure benzene adsorption structure which could be converted to the c(2- Show more

“…These authors found a work function decrease of )0.8 eV, a value that is much lower than the value of )1.6 eV that we found at saturation coverage. This extremely high work function decrease found in the present case gives evidence for a dense packing of benzene molecules [40].…”

“…Multiple HÁÁÁÁF hydrogen bonding in networks of fluorinated rigid C 3 v-symmetric hydrocarbons were also identified to create CW and CCW assemblies at the solid/liquid interface on hopg [90]. Even quadrupolequadrupole interactions have been put forward to explain [77]. The van der Waals (vdW) radii of the molecules are indicated.…”

“…Hamm et al [22] found, that benzene forms a well ordered overlayer on Pd (1 1 1 [23,24] found an ordered benzene/CO mixed overlayer on Rh (1 1 1), with a cð2 ffiffi ffi 3 p  4Þrect unit cell. Neuber et al [25] reported that benzene also forms a ð ffiffiffiffiffi 19 p  ffiffiffiffiffi 19 p ÞR AE 23:4 overlayer in the absence of CO ad , while the formation of the cð2 ffiffi ffi 3 p  4Þrect and (3 · 3) structures was observed when the adsorbate layer was exposed to CO. These results stress that even small CO ad contaminations can have a large influence on the ordering of benzene on a fcc (1 1 1) surface.…”
