Influence is a critical competency for success in the workplace. Past research has shown that two oral communication skills (listening and oral expression) are associated with interpersonal influence. This exploratory study examines the effectiveness of two pedagogies (leaderless group discussion [LGD] and oral presentation with a question and answer time [P+Q&A]) in developing these oral communication skills. MBA students enrolled in online courses participated in this pedagogical research. The results of paired-sample t test procedures and correlation analyses of self- and peer ratings suggest that LGD and P+Q&A are effective in developing listening and oral expression skills, which, in turn, are related to interpersonal influence. Other key findings indicate that the reactions of the MBA students to LGD and P+Q&A are favorable, and the intentions of MBA students to transfer these communication skills back to their jobs are strong. We discuss the two pedagogies from the perspectives of relevance, improvisation, inductive/deductive discourse, and Bloom’s taxonomy of learning. We end with a discussion of the implications of these findings for business education priorities and business instructors.

emissions in Germany. While air travel is indispensable for large distance traveling, there are more climate-friendly alternatives for short distances. Therefore, especially domestic flights, which are often used for business trips, should be considered critically. The question arises to what extent domestic flights are compatible with CSR activities of companies and whether business-related domestic flights are necessary. Could they be replaced by more environmentally sustainable means of transport, e.g. by train? In addition, if not, what are the reasons? Beyond that, the question arises why business trips within Germany are carried out at all. Is it possible to replace a business trip by using alternative digital communication methods? For this study, a survey among business travelers at Stuttgart Airport is used to examine the necessity of as well as motivations and alternatives for domestic flights under the aspect of sustainability.

ZusammenfassungUnternehmen müssen immer höheren Umweltanforderungen gerecht werden. Ein vermehrter Einsatz von Informationstechnologien (IT) und Informationssystemen (IS), sowie deren Einbeziehung in Nachhaltigkeitsinitiativen können dabei einen großen Beitrag leisten. Um Manager dabei zu unterstützen, haben wir Literatur analysiert und Green IT und Green IS Maßnahmen identifiziert und nach Umsetzbarkeit und ökologischen Benefits kategorisiert. Wir stellen insbesondere schnell umsetzbare Maßnahmen mit hohen ökologischen Benefits vor (Quick Wins), von denen viele einen direkten Bezug zu Nutzung und Management von Hardware haben und daher als Green IT-Maßnahmen kategorisiert werden können. Es wird deutlich, dass diese Maßnahmen als erste Schritte hin zu einer langfristigen Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie, welche die organisationsinterne sowie -übergreifende Nutzung von IT und IS beinhaltet, abzielt. Aufgrund der Diversität von Unternehmen stellen die Ergebnisse jedoch keine Universallösung dar, sondern müssen den Charakteristika des jeweiligen Unternehmens entsprechend bewertet und angepasst werden.
