Heat transfer within lithium‐ion‐battery electrodes constitutes an important issue regarding not only battery performance but also safety aspects. The objective of this study is to gain insight into the thermal behavior of particles forming lithium‐ion electrodes to understand the effect of microstructural parameters on heat conduction and, ultimately, improve electrode design. To this end, a discrete element method (DEM) approach is proposed in which a contact model is included. Thus, individual particles are modelled within the electrode and their temperature values are tracked just after the copper substrate, on which the particles are coated, is heated from 273 to 350 K. Furthermore, by adjusting numerous simulations with different structural parameters, namely porosity, particle size, and electrode thickness, the effect of these parameters on the heating rate is investigated.

Numerical investigation on transverse heat transfer properties in cross section of full size Nb3Sn CICC ITER conductor

The contact mechanical characteristics in the cross section of the Nb3Sn cable are sensitive to the cryogenic cooling and cyclic transverse electromagnetic loads, which may affect the cable’s performance. In this paper, based on a proposed discrete dynamic model (DEM), where the contact heat transfer among strands and the convective heat transfer in liquid helium are taken into account, the cooling process under two heat transfer mechanisms is performed. Simulation results show that the temperature variation of Poloidal Field Insert Sample (PFIS) cable with time agrees well with the existing experimental results, and the role of contact heat transfer cannot be neglected during cryogenic cooling. It is obtained from the further analysis that the effect of contact heat transfer becomes more prominent with the decrease of mass flow rate of liquid helium, which leads to the stress status within cable changed significantly. With the temperature boundary condition imposed on the cable radial direction, the effective thermal conductivity (ETC) of cable can be obtained. It can be found that the ETC increases with increasing the transverse loads and is sensitive to the low temperature environment, while it is not affected by load cycles basically. These results may provide the guide for the design and application of the future CICC conductors.

GeomInt–Mechanical Integrity of Host Rocks

An essential scientific goal of the GeomInt project is the analysis of potentials and limitations of different numerical approaches for the modelling of discontinuities in the rocks under consideration in order to improve the understanding of methods and their synergies with regard to theoretical and numerical fundamentals. As numerical methods, the “Lattice Element Method” (LEM), the non-continuous discontinuum methods “Discrete Element Method” (DEM), the “Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics” (SPH), the “Forces on Fracture Surfaces” (FFS) as well as the continuum approaches “Phase-Field Method” (PFM), “Lower-Interface-Method” (LIE), “Non-Local Deformation” (NLD) and the “Hybrid-Dimensional Finite-Element-Method” (HDF) will be systematically investigated and appropriately extended based on experimental results (Fig. 3.1).
