Globally, almond production is experiencing a growing trend thanks to a strong interest in the health, gastronomic, and industrial properties that are linked to the fruits and their derivatives. After a constant and marked decline in the second half of the last century, the Mediterranean Basin is thoroughly reassessing this crop, which provides significant results with a modern orchard management. The opportunity determined by the transition from traditional to modern systems have increased the interest in evaluating the different environmental impacts of the two cultivation models that still coexist today. In this work, through the application of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and an economic assessment approach with an in-depth analysis related to the cultivation cycle and the use of resources, the role played by each factor involved in production was determined. Overall, the Greenhouses Gases (GHG) emissions in modern farms are higher (Global Warming Potential (GWP) 0.224 kg CO2 eq.) than those in traditional farms (GWP 0.182 kg CO2 eq.). Regarding the economic assessment, it appears relevant that the modern almond model in the full production phase guarantees significantly higher margins (+84%).The perception of the importance attributed to evaluating economic and environmental aspects by different stakeholders shows relevant differences in the approach coming from growers, dealers, and governmental institutions allows the investigators to positively underline the current innovation in almond orchard systems considering the balance between fruit production and the conservation of environmental resources.

Poor Residents’ Perceptions of the Impacts of Tourism on Poverty Alleviation: From the Perspective of Multidimensional Poverty

Tourism plays a crucial role in alleviating poverty deprivations and achieving sustainable development. Nevertheless, there is a lack of literature regarding evaluating poor residents’ perceptions of the impacts of tourism on poverty alleviation from the perspective of multidimensional poverty. Taking Fenghuang County, China, as the study area, this study established an evaluation framework by using the Delphi method based on multidimensional poverty theory. Moreover, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was employed to identify the weight of each indicator and assess poor residents’ perceptions of the impacts of tourism on poverty alleviation. The results indicate that tourism economic development has been a momentous contributor to alleviating multidimensional poverty in study locations to a certain extent (3.180). However, there is still room for improvement and promotion. With respect to various dimensions, the mean of economic level is the highest (1.125), whilst the means of education training (0.420) and health care (0.819) are relatively lower than the other dimensions.

Identifying Consensus and Open Questions around Assessing or Predicting the Quality and Success of Cartilage Repair: A Delphi Study

A range of surgical techniques have been developed for the repair or regeneration of lesioned cartilage in the human knee and a corresponding array of scoring systems have been created to assess their outcomes. The published literature displays a wide range of opinions regarding the factors that influence the success of surgical cartilage repair and which parameters are the most useful for measuring the quality of the repair at follow-up. Our objective was to provide some clarity to the field by collating items that were agreed upon by a panel of experts to be important in these areas. A modified, three-round Delphi consensus study was carried out consisting of one idea-generating focus-group and two subsequent, self-completed questionnaire rounds. In each round, items were assessed for their importance and level of consensus against pre-determined threshold levels. In total, 31 items reached consensus, including a hierarchy of tissues in the joint based on their importance in cartilage repair, markers of repair cartilage quality and the implications of environmental and patient-related factors. Items were stratified into those that can be employed for predicting the success of cartilage repair and those that could be used for assessing the structural quality of the resulting repair cartilage. Items that did not reach consensus represent areas where dissent remains and could, therefore, be used to guide future clinical and fundamental scientific research.
