A decreased peritumoral CD1a+ cell number predicts a worse prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: Our results suggest that depletion of peritumoral CD1a+ cells is a strong independent prognostic factor, predicting a higher recurrence rates and worse survival outcomes.

“…Seven different articles assessed the prognostic value of DC, using seven different markers 28,45,[53][54][55][56][57] (Table 2). High numbers of both immature CD209+ DC and plasmacytoid CD123+ DC were associated with decreased survival in one study, whereas high numbers of the other subsets of DC were mostly associated with improved survival.…”

“…There is a growing number of evidences supporting the hypothesis that different subtypes of DC play important roles in the immunosurveillance against neoplastic cells and that the distribution and/or the regular function of these cellular populations are altered in many human tumors including oral cancer, lip cancer, mycosis fungoids, cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas, and others (8)(9)(10)(11). Moreover, different authors have attributed a significant prognostic importance for DC in several of these malignant neoplasms (12,13), speculating that changes in these cells would not only predispose to neoplastic development, but it would also represent potential therapeutic targets for future chemotherapy schemes.…”

“…Positive controls were included in all reactions in accordance with the manufacturer's protocols. The selection of the antibodies was based on their well-established biological properties and previous investigations in different neoplasms The immunohistochemical stains were evaluated by automated examination based on a previous methodology (25). All slides were scanned with the Scan Scope Aperio System (Aperio, Vista, CA, USA) obtaining a high-quality resolution digital image.…”

“…Once there are no studies that investigate DCs in HNC in HIV-positive patients, the quantification of these cells is prime for a better understanding of this subject and may reveal important data for future steps. However, a great variability of values has been noticed in studies investigating the density of DCs (19,(22)(23)(24)(25), which complicate the use of published data as reference for new studies.…”
