A Decomposition Approach for the Two-Stage Stochastic Supply Network Planning in Light of the Rolling Horizon Practice

Abstract: Industries conduct the Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) to balance demand and supply aligned to business targets. This study aims at proposing a model and an algorithm for the tactical supply chain planning admitting uncertainty and reflecting the peculiar S&OP aspect of rolling horizon planning. Therefore, a two-stage stochastic programming model is developed and solved via a multi-cut Benders decomposition algorithm. The model and the solution method are evaluated by numerical experiments and a case stud… Show more

“…These may demand more computational effort to have an optimal solution, creating opportunities for the proposal of heuristics and their integration with the proposed models. Another line of research seeking to accelerate the resolution of the models is related to the development of valid inequalities related to the positioning of items and the proposal of methods based on Benders decomposition (Almeida & Conceic ¸ão, 2021).…”

“…Furthermore, we employ a rolling horizon approach to enable the 3SCOPE model to make real-time adjustments to evolving market conditions and unexpected disruptions in the supply chain of the EM. As stochastic optimization becomes more computationally expensive with increasing problem scale [47], we utilize a multi-cut Benders decomposition method to allow the EM to solve the 3SCOPE model at a larger scale. We also propose three benchmark models as potential alternatives for solving the eVTOL supply chain problem, and compare the performance of these models with the 3SCOPE model.…”

“…In another study [47], the authors developed a two-stage stochastic model aiming to address procurement planning from a given set of suppliers, transportation of parts to manufacturing plant, and inventory management of these parts. However, they did not consider the challenges related to optimal supplier selection, manufacturing scheduling, and the transportation of manufactured products to customers.…”
