A database of age-appropriate average MRI templates

Abstract: This article summarizes a life-span neurodevelopmental MRI database. The study of neurostructural development or neurofunctional development has been hampered by the lack of age-appropriate MRI reference volumes. This causes misspecification of segmented data, irregular registrations, and the absence of appropriate stereotaxic volumes. We have created the “Neurodevelopmental MRI Database” that provides age-specific reference data from 2 weeks through 89 years of age. The data are presented in fine-grained ages… Show more

“…It is possible that such long-term perceptual deficits might affect the 'baseline' activation of the ageing posterior cortex. Such perceptual deficits might also have effects on higher-order centres in the anterior cortex. The anterior cortex is a commonly targeted site for studying age-related cognitive decline because it undergoes rapid loss in grey and white matter (Richards et al, 2016;Salat et al, 2004). Consistent with PASA, we found increased activation in the anterior cortex in IFG, particularly at low loads.…”

“…We used atlases from the Neurodevelopmental MRI Database (Fillmore et al, 2015;Richards and Xie, 2015;Richards et al, 2016) for all participants. The age of each participant was used to choose the appropriate atlas from the database.…”

“…Our goals were to construct the automatic atlases and validate them against manually delineated individual participant atlases. Thus, our first objective was to create a manually labeled, age-specific stereotaxic atlas for average MRI templates for infants at 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9, and 12 months of age on average MRI templates ([1]; [5];[9];[10]). We performed manual delineation of 14 areas (lobar and sub-lobar) on each infant-based age-specific template.…”

“…Therefore, a correlation of imaging findings with symptoms is essential for correct interpretation [43]. The diagnostic reliability for the differentiation of physiological age-related changes from hydrocephalus can be increased by using age-specific reference images [44].…”
