A Data-driven Model for Large Wildfire Behaviour Prediction in Europe

Abstract: The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) has been established by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Directorate General for Environment (DG ENV) of the European Commission (EC) in close collaboration with the Member States and neighbour countries. EFFIS is intended as complementary system to national and regional systems in the countries, providing harmonised information required for international collaboration on forest fire prevention and fighting and in cases of trans-boundary fire events. “…While fragmentation is correlated with carbon stock alteration [50,51], its relationship with forest cover is complex [48,49].The post-disturbance regeneration of vegetation might sometimes preserve the fractions fc man,typ c , but it can alter biomass and carbon stock [50,52]. In Europe, around 65000 wildfires per year burn approximately 500,000 hectares of wildland and forests [53]. The effect of fires and other disturbances also impacts on the canopy cover and thus on the non-living component of the carbon stock -here not modelled -by means of soil erosion [54][55][56].…”

“…Besides and complementing national scale systems, fire information in Europe can rely on the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) which operates over 30 countries in the European and Mediterranean regions, covering the full cycle of forest fire management [6]. Ongoing research [9,25] investigates integrated fire behaviour modelling with the help of high resolution meteorological data (e.g. [48,49]) within a modelling paradigm which exploits geospatial and computational tools [15] for supporting robustness and semantic transparency [5,12].…”

“…In Europe [6], wildfires are one of the major treats at landscape scale. Wildfires have a particular impact in the Mediterranean Europe [7][8][9] while affecting the aerosol load even in Northern part of the continent [10,11]. Whilst their immediate impact ranges from endangering human life to the destruction of economic assets, other damages exceed the spatio-temporal scale of a fire event [9].…”

“…Among them, wildfires have a major impact especially in southern Europe (Mediterranean region) [52]. Besides their direct environmental impact, wildfires can result in future secondary effects such as shallow landslides and debris flows [53,54].…”
