Background Localized fat is a matter of great concern among individuals from today's society. Cryolipolysis is a noninvasive technique that have shown great results in reducing localized fat. Aims To analyze the efficacy of cryoplipolysis on visible local fat reduction in submental region, arms, or male breast (pseudogynecomastia) in Brazilian subjects, and to assess possible factors associated with treatment success. Methods Single‐arm, nonrandomized trial, with volunteers from both genders with visible excess fat in the arms or submental region or men presenting pseudogynecomastia. Eligible subjects were submitted to physical, photographic, and ultrasound analysis before and three months after intervention. A single cryolipolysis session was performed using specific methods for each region, followed by a local massage for two minutes. Data were described as measures of central tendency and dispersion and measures of frequency. Reduction in measurements and factors associated with treatment success was analyzed using appropriate statistical tests. Results Thirty‐six subjects underwent one session of cryolipolysis in each area (22 subjects treated the arms, 20 the submental region and 9 the breast). In general, a mean reduction of 19.1% was observed. Significant differences were observed for almost all body parts analyzed. Body mass index was the only variable showing a significant relationship with intervention results. Conclusions Cryolipolysis is a useful noninvasive tool in reduction of visible localized fat in arms and submental region and of pseudogynecomastia. Obese subjects are not benefited by the treatment.

MRI Assessment of Arm and Calf Muscle Toning With High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Technology: Case Study

Arms and calves have long been a subject of interest in aesthetic medicine. Current surgical and non-invasive procedures focus on sagging skin and fat deposits without targeting the muscles. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology for arm and calf toning through simultaneous fat reduction and muscle strengthening. In this case study, two subjects received four 20-minute HIFEM treatments of biceps, triceps, and calves, with the outcomes assessed by MRI. The analysis of MRI images showed an average increase in all three muscle groups, biceps muscle mass 17.1%, triceps muscle mass 10.2%, and gastrocnemius muscle mass increased by 14.6%. In addition, the arm fat thickness was decreased by 12.8% on average and the calf fat thickness decreased by 9.9%. The results suggest that HIFEM technology is a feasible modality for both arm and calf toning. However, it will be necessary to continue to validate this outcome in a larger sample size study.

The visibility of arm contour in both men and women has been a source of discussion throughout time. Arm strength and athleticism is not limited to the male physique only. Iconic women such as Madonna and Michelle Obama have made discussions about arm contour more and more commonplace. Over the years arm contour has been a difficult area to address due to the thinness of the skin which often required surgical excision and unsightly scars. Liposuction of the arm has advanced to not only allow for improved contour but also options of refining muscular definition. With the addition of energy-based technologies such as radiofrequency, we can offer less invasive options to patients who may have previously only been candidates for excisional procedures. Liposuction of the arms can be performed under local anesthesia. This chapter introduces a new algorithm for assessment and treatment of arm contour which incorporates newer energy-based devices along with surgical options.
