This review is devoted to adaptogens, plant products capable of producing nonspecific responses in the human body, resulting in increasing the resistance against multiple stressors (physical, chemical or biological) and capable of having a normalizing effect to the human body. Adaptogens must be non-toxic, harmless, capable of not influencing normal body functions more than required, and capable of treating depression, a common neuropsychiatric illness, the importance of which is increasing by number of new patients every year. Number of plants are able to produce natural compounds, which meet the criteria of becoming adaptogens. The most known of them are used in traditional medicine for centuries.

The south Brazilian Hypericum species have revealed the presence of a series of biologically active phloroglucinol derivatives. In this study, a mixture of japonicine A and an isomer with an unreported structure, named japonicine E, was isolated from the roots of H. polyanthemum. Additionally, uliginosin A from H. myrianthum, isouliginosin B from H. polyanthemum, hyperbrasilol B and isohyperbrasilol B from H. caprifoliatum and cariphenone A from H. carinatum were also isolated. The structures were elucidated using 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments and by comparison with previously reported data. The compounds japonicines A/E, uliginosin A, isouliginosin B, hyperbrasilol B and cariphenone A exhibited antinociceptive activity in the mice hot-plate test and did not induce motor impairment in the rotarod apparatus.

Резюме: Жълтият кантарион (Hypericum perforatum L.) е много популярна билка, която се използва главно за лечение на лека до умерена депресия. Целта на настоящото изследване е да се проучат наличните на фармацевтичния пазар в България лекарствени продукти и хранителни добавки, съдържащи жълт кантарион, и да се анализира употребата на такива продукти. Употребата на съдържащи жълт кантарион продукти е проучена чрез събиране на данни за продажбите от 19 аптеки в гр. Варна за периода 2014-2016 г. Резултатите показват наличие в аптечната мрежа в България на два лекарствени монопродукта и множество хранителни добавки (монопродукти и комбинирани). В проучвания период се наблюдава нарастване на продажбите на продукти, съдържащи жълт кантарион. Цената на продуктите през проучвания период остава сравнително постоянна. Преобладава употребата на лекарствените продукти. За предпочитане е продуктите, съдържащи жълт кантарион, да бъдат употребявани по лекарско предписание, тъй като билката участва в множество лекарствени взаимодействия. Ключови думи: жълт кантарион, лекарствени продукти, хранителни добавки, употреба, България Summary: St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) is a very popular herb that is mainly used for mild to moderate depression. The purpose of this study was to explore the available on the market in Bulgaria pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements containing St. John's Wort, and to analyze the use of such products. The use of St. John's Wort containing products was studied by collecting sales data from 19 pharmacies in Varna for the period 2014-2016. According to the study results, on the pharmaceutical market in Bulgaria St. John's Wort is available as two pharmaceutical monoproducts and a number of dietary supplements (monoproducts and combined). In the studied period, there was an increase in the sales of products containing St. John's Wort. The price of the products during the study period remained relatively constant. Predominant was the use of pharmaceutical products. It is preferable that products containing St. John's wort be used on prescription as the herb is involved in multiple drug interactions.
