A current affair: electrotherapy in wound healing

Abstract: New developments in accelerating wound healing can have immense beneficial socioeconomic impact. The wound healing process is a highly orchestrated series of mechanisms where a multitude of cells and biological cascades are involved. The skin battery and current of injury mechanisms have become topics of interest for their influence in chronic wounds. Electrostimulation therapy of wounds has shown to be a promising treatment option with no-device-related adverse effects. This review presents an overview of the… Show more

“…This approach has led to many key discoveries regarding the roles of animal bioelectrical signaling (e.g. early tissue development (9,10), regeneration (11) and carcinogenesis (1214)) and has fostered the development of real-world applications such as for tissue engineering (1517), wound healing (6,18) and electroceuticals (19). Utilizing exogenous stimuli is an important step forward toward understanding bacterial electrical signaling and development of applications based on bacterial electrophysiology.…”

“…Basically, the regulation of the JAK/STAT pathway is carried out by various mechanisms such as tyrosine phosphatase, internalization-degradation of signaling molecules, receptor antagonists, and inhibitors such as inhibitors of activated STAT proteins (PIAS) or suppressors of cytokine signaling proteins (SOCS) [52].…”

“…Although not properly known, the JAK/STAT signaling is regulated by SOCS proteins, having an influence on the action of cytokines and growth factors, as well as on the cells involved in the wound repair process [52]. SOCS have been related to inflammatory diseases, Wound Healing -Current Perspectives since in the absence of SOCS3, IL-6 acts decreasing tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), by inhibiting the STAT3 signaling.…”

“…In the most intestinal cancer surgery, the success of the surgery is dependent on the integrity of the anastomoses in the inflammation phase [1]. Hand suturing was the main method for intestinal anastomoses in the past.…”
