“…As análises aqui conduzidas demonstraram claras diferenças entre o comportamento de forrageamento de ambas, indicando que S. affinis forrageia em locais mais altos e de vegetação mais fechada que S. islerorum, sendo também observadas diferenças quanto ao tipo de substrato utilizado por cada uma das espécies. ABSTRACT. Diet and foraging behavior of Suiriri affinis and S. islerorum (Aves, Tyrannidae) in a central Brazilian cerrado. The foraging behavior of Suiriri affinis (Campo Suiriri) and S. islerorum (Chapada Flycatcher), two sintopic Tyrant Flycatchers in the Central Brazilian Cerrado (tropical savanna) was studied. During 2003, 188 feeding bouts of S. affinis and 150 of S. islerorum were registered. Differences between the two species in the feeding height, foraging substrate, phytophysiognomy used, and foliage density at the point of foraging observation were found. The attack methods, attack direction, distance of flight, and plant species used did not differ between both species. The analysis of 26 stomach contents of members of this genus revealed only arthropods. The low percentage of feeding bouts directed to fruits (only 7% and 9%, respectively) confirmed the insectivorous character of this genus.KEYWORDS. Abstract. Birds with songs having two or more acoustically distinct elements can arrange them either rigidly (i.e., in the same sequence) or flexibly. Flexible song syntax can be achieved either by varying the number of repetitions of elements or by combining elements in different ways. Combinatorial syntax has been documented only in the songs of oscine passerines and in one nonpasserine, but not in the suboscine passerines. Dawn and day songs of a tyrant flycatcher, the Flammulated Attila (Attila flammulatus), were recorded in Costa Rica. Flexible syntax was noted in both dawn and day song. Attilas not only varied the number of repetitions of their song elements but also combined elements in various ways. This appears to be the first reported case of combinatorial song syntax in a suboscine species.Key words: Attila, song, suboscine, syntax, tyrant flycatcher. Las aves canoras que poseen dos o más elementos acústicos distintivos pueden acomodarlos ya sea de modo rígido (i.e., en la misma secuencia) o de modo flexible. La sintaxis flexible de cantos puede alcanzarse ya sea variando el número de repeticiones de los elementos o combinando los elementos de diferentes modos. La sintaxis combinatoria ha sido documentada sólo en los cantos de paserinos oscines y en un ave no paserina, pero no en paserinos suboscines. Los cantos del amanecer y diurnos de un tiránido atrapamoscas, Attila flammulatus, fueron registrados en Costa Rica. Encontramos evidencia de sintaxis flexible en cantos del amanecer y diurnos. A. flammulatus no sólo varió el número de repeticiones de su canto, sino que también combinó elementos de varios modos. Este parece ser el primer registro de sintaxis canora combinatoria en una especie suboscine.

we monitored 25 nests of Campo Suiriri and 20 nests of Chapada Flycatcher. The simple percentage of successful nests was 32% for Campo Suiriri and 10% for Chapada Flycatcher, whereas the reproductive success calculated by the Mayfield method was 19% for Campo Suiriri and 14% for Chapada Flycatcher. The estimated values of daily survivorship rate (DSR) for Campo Suiriri are as follows: egg period 0.971 and nestling period 0.944. For Chapada Flycatcher the figures were 0.964 and 0.930, respectively. No differences in DSRs between species or periods were statistically significant. All nest losses of Campo Suiriri were due to predation, while for Chapada Flycatcher predation accounted for 78% of nest losses and the remaining 22% was due to parasitism by botfly larvae (Philornis sp.). The low reproductive success of Chapada Flycatcher is close to the lowest values recorded for Neotropical birds and might be a threat to this species and an important variable in the determination of its conservation status.
