“…Surprisingly, our MOH patients did not show any significant differences on the scales measuring dependence compared with patients with episodic headaches and healthy controls: MAC‐R (MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale‐Revised), Aas (Addiction Admission Scale), Aps (Addiction Potential Scale) did not discriminate between the 2 clinical samples. Different studies clearly showed the validity of MMPI‐2 “dependency” subscales in correctly discriminating substance abusers 33‐37 . So, rather than “true” addiction behavior, a different kind of “dependence” appears to characterize headache patients.…”

“…However, we do not know exactly if the problem is related to MMPI‐2 “per se,” or if the dependency in MOH shows different characteristics to be studied. Considering that the “dependency” subscales correctly distinguish substance abusers, 33‐37 we might hypothesize that rather than “true” addiction behavior, a different kind of “dependence” characterizes headache patients. We have to consider the strong impact of daily, persistent pain which becomes an important issue in the life of these patients.…”

“…However, tests of this type tend be quite long. For example, some of these tests are embedded in the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, which contains over 500 items, and thus may not be appropriate to use in health care settings where there is limited time to administer and score the screening test (29).…”

“…Validity analyses conducted on a cross-validation sample indicated a 97% correct classification with a sensitivity of 97% and specificity of 95%. Compared with other screening measures such as the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test [Selzer, 1971], Addiction Potential Scale [Greene et al, 1992], Addiction Acknowledgment Scale , MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale-Revised [Butcher et al, 1989], and Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II Alcohol Dependence and Drug Dependence scales [Millon, 1987], those who were classified positive for substance abuse had higher mean scores on the other screening measures than those classified as negative for substance abuse.…”
