Abstract: We examined the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and measures of tenderness, quality of life, and physical functioning in female fibromyalgia (FMS) patients. A random sample of 100 female FMS patients from a database of 550 FMS individuals was interviewed and assessed according to a structured questionnaire that included FMS-related symptoms, measures of tenderness (point count and dolorimetry), quality of life (SF-36), physical functioning, and BMI. “…Many patients with fibromyalgia are overweight and sedentary, and recent studies suggest that obesity in patients with fibromyalgia is associated with increased dysfunction (31,32). Similar to the previous fibromyalgia trials, the mean baseline body mass index for the participants in this trial was ϳ31 kg/m 2 , which exceeds the World Health Organization threshold for obesity (33).…”

“…In fact, overweight and obesity are highly frequent in these people, and body mass index has a negative correlation with quality of life and tenderness threshold, and a positive correlation with physical dysfunction and pain point count. Obese FM patients show higher pain sensitivity and lower levels of quality of life [52]. The high prevalence of overweight and obesity was showed also in a health telephonic survey made only on female participants, with and without FM.…”
