A cross-disciplinary approach to understanding neural stem cells in development and disease

Abstract: The Company of Biologists recently launched a new series of workshops aimed at bringing together scientists with different backgrounds to discuss cutting edge research in emerging and cross-disciplinary areas of biology. The first workshop was held at Wilton Park, Sussex, UK, and the chosen theme was 'Neural Stem Cells in Development and Disease', which is indeed a hot topic, not only because of the potential use of neural stem cells in cell replacement therapies to treat neurodegenerative diseases, but also b… Show more

“…Since a long time, studies on NSCs defined as self-renewing CNS cells that can differentiate into any of the three major neural cell lineages, specifically neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, have been attempt almost in mammals [16,17]. Because of the lack of data on the culture of fish neural cells, with the exception on studies from the adult zebra fish injured brain, we carried out the characterization and lineage differentiation of NPCs from seabream CNS, primarily isolated by our research group and known as SaGliPs [35].…”

“…The self-renewing ability of NSCs which can differentiate neuroepithelial precursors into neural cell lineage of oligodendrocytes it has been recently demonstrated [16,17]. In mammals, oligodendrocytes develop from the neuroepithelial precursors that line the so-called VZ.…”

“…The development of type II neuroblast lineages in Drosophila mimics that of mammalian neural stem cells, which contain transit-amplifying cells [68,69]. Therefore Drosophila type II neuroblast lineages have emerged as an attractive model system to study the fundamental molecular network controlling the cell fate specification and proliferation of neural stem cell lineage progenitors.…”
