A critical review on fundamental mechanisms of spontaneous imbibition and the impact of boundary condition, fluid viscosity and wettability

Abstract: Spontaneous imbibition (SI) is one of the primary mechanisms of oil production from matrix system in fractured reservoirs. The main driving force for SI is capillary pressure. Researches relating to SI are moving fast. In the past few years, amount of literature on the development of SI with respect to many variables, such as mechanism of imbibition, scaling of imbibition data and wettability of matrix blocks. In this review, we first introduced the fundamental physics mechanism of SI through capillary tube mo… Show more

“…Therefore, the scope of water-wetting angle (β) of matrix from 90 • to 180 • is chosen for sensitivity analyses of imbibition. The phenomenon, "the smaller contact angle, the more beneficial influence of imbibition", 49 is in accord with the results of sensitivity analysis of imbibition, as shown in Fig. 8.…”

“…If the tube is fully immersed in water, spontaneous imbibition would not occur because the capillary pressure between the two sides of tube is the same. The capillary pressure in different side of tube must be different when the counter-current occurs (Unsal et al, 2007a;Meng et al, 2017a). Since the structure of porous media is complex, more tube models were developed.…”

“…air, natural gas, oil). [5][6][7] This process, using water or brine with added surfactants to displace oil, has been proposed as an enhanced recovery technique. 8,9 With the rapid growth and implementation of fracking technology, SI is now being investigated as a method of improving the recovery of hydrocarbon resources from fractured unconventional reservoirs.…”
