A Critical Review of the Science and Engineering of Cathodic Protection of Steel in Soil and Concrete

Abstract: After a century of history of cathodic protection (CP) of iron and steel, this paper critically reviews the state of the art in the science and engineering and assesses the fitness of CP as an effective technology to tackle the challenges related to infrastructure corrosion. This paper focuses on CP of iron-based alloys embedded in porous media, such as soil or concrete, as these two major applications of CP technology share many similarities. First, the scientific understanding of CP is reviewed and different… Show more

“…In the last years, various investigations with respect to CP have raised the understanding that the pH is an important parameter in providing the corrosion protection. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] In many cases relatively small protection current densities in the range of a few tens of mA/m 2 result in an increase of the pH value at the steel surface of coating defects of pipelines. This increase of the pH favors the formation of a passive film, which significantly limits any further corrosion.…”

“…In addition, the protective effect of cathodic protection measures is greatly affected by the soil resistivity. Therefore, the application of the cathodic protection method on the grounding grid is still in the experimental stage, and the actual application remains few in number [ 108 , 109 ].…”

“…One idea has recently been put forward that the effectiveness of CP of an underground structure to be protected can be verified by means of measurements on coupons buried in the vicinity of the structure to be protected [6] . This inevitably leads to an impasse from the facts presented in the last section, because it is practically impossible that the same local distribution of j A (x, y) is present on the metal surface of a coupon as on a nearby coating defect on the protected object.…”
