Although great efforts have been made to decrease nutrient (notably nitrogen and phosphorus) loads and lighten related environmental damages, coastal eutrophication remains a persistent environmental crisis. To estimate whether the rapid development of the local economy has accelerated the eutrophication in Zhanjiang Bay, a newly developing industry in South China, the combination of the seasonal nutrients and other physicochemical parameters from twenty cruises during 2017-2021 and historical data (past 30 years) was analyzed in this study. The results showed that the eutrophication in the upper bay is significantly higher than that in the lower bay (more than 8 times), which is mainly related to the terrestrial input and weak hydrological conditions in the upper bay. Also, eutrophication is more severe in the rainy seasons than that in the dry seasons (nearly 2 times) because abundant nitrogen and phosphorus were brought into the bay by terrestrial discharge and river water. From a long-term perspective, dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations have been effectively controlled in Zhanjiang Bay, while phosphate concentration increased sharply in the past 30 years. Correspondingly, the eutrophication in Zhanjiang Bay significantly increased over the past 30 years, and the eutrophication index in the recent 5 years (2017-2021) is nearly 10 times that of the 1990s, suggesting that the increase of phosphate discharge from the increasing industrial factories around Zhanjiang Bay, rather than nitrogen discharge is the culprit causing the aggravation of eutrophication. Our study is essential to effectively implement a land-ocean integrated nitrogen and phosphorus control strategy to improve water quality and mitigate eutrophication in the bay.

Background: Phosphorous necrosis of the jaw (PNJ) shares similar clinical and pathological features to medical-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). This study aims to compare the similarities and differences between PNJ and medical-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in terms of clinical and pathological features, and to provide a theoretical basis for the clinical diagnosis and management of PNJ.Material and Methods: A retrospective analysis assessed clinical differences among 38 PNJ patients and 31 MRONJ patients diagnosed and treated between January 2009 and October 2022. Pathological alterations in bone tissue were assessed using EDS, H&E, Masson and TRAP staining on ve specimens from both MRONJ and PNJ cases, and immunohistochemistry was used to determine the expression levels of OPG, RANKL, and Runx2. The mandibular coronoid process was removed from individuals with temporomandibular joint ankylosis as control.Results: CBCT imaging indicated necrotic bone formation in block, strip, or plaque shapes. EDS analysis revealed that the calcium/phosphorus ratio in the bone tissue of PNJ and MRONJ was signi cantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.05). Additionally, staining indicated reduced osteoblast counts, disrupted bone trabecular structure, and decreased collagen ber content in the bone tissues of PNJ and MRONJ. Immunohistochemistry revealed that RANKL expression was signi cantly lower in MRONJ compared to PNJ and control groups (P<0.05). Conversely, Runx2 expression was signi cantly higher in PNJ than in MRONJ and control groups (P<0.05), with no signi cant difference in OPG expression.Conclusion: PNJ and MRONJ exhibit comparable clinical manifestations and pathological traits, although disparities may exist in their underlyingexhibit comparable clinical manifestations and pathological traits, although disparities may exist in their underlying molecular mechanisms.

The growing interest in eco-friendly alternatives has sparked research into essential oils as corrosion inhibitors, offering an innovative approach. Investigating their unique properties, researchers aim to advance corrosion engineering for a sustainable future. Despite promising lab results, the exact mechanism of their action in corrosion engineering is not fully understood, highlighting the need for further exploration. Using computational modeling, we explored how grape seed oil (GSO) compounds interact with carbon steel (C38) surfaces, unraveling the inhibitive properties against corrosion. Employing various simulation methods, such as density functional theory (DFT), density functional-based tight-binding (DFTB), and molecular dynamics (MD), this study validates experimental findings and unveils novel insights into the underlying mechanisms of these interactions. Quantitative analysis quantifies the inter- and intramolecular synergistic effect and suggests that the LA@OA promotes the charge-transfer process. DFTB calculations reveal that the synergistic action in the parallel adsorption configuration of LA and OA molecules is sufficiently strong to form a stable adsorption layer on the Fe surface with a large negative value of Eads (6.74 eV). Experimental results demonstrated that the inhibition performance of GSO extract exhibited a notable increase with increasing concentrations, reaching a higher efficiency of 79% at 0.5 g/L of GSO. EIS results demonstrated that the existence of the GSO inhibitor film increases the resistance of the charge transfer (about 80 Ω cm2 at 0.5 g/L), indicating the superior barrier anticorrosion properties of the formed film. The theoretical results validate the exceptional anticorrosion performance and provide compelling evidence of the remarkable ability to prevent corrosion of C38 substrate. The findings offer potential pathways for the development of eco-friendly alternatives and interestingly provide a foundation understanding in the field.
