A critical review of marine biofilms on metallic materials

Abstract: The formation of multi-species biofilms on marine infrastructure costs the global economy US $ billions annually, resulting in biofouling and microbiologically influenced corrosion. It is well documented that complex biofilms form on almost any submerged surface, yet there are still no truly effective and environmentally friendly treatment or prevention options available. An incomplete fundamental understanding of natural biofilm development remains a key limitation for biofilm control measures. The purpose of… Show more

“…Biofilms are multicellular communities of microorganisms encapsulated in a matrix of exopolymeric substances 1 . They are diverse, ubiquitous, and are play a huge role in many diseases, and thus biofilms have been described extensively in the literature [2][3][4] . Biofilms can be both beneficial and detrimental to human society depending on their location and the species involved.…”

“…The impact of bacterial colonization goes beyond the health sector. Losses in the food industry due to bacterial colonization and related issues amount to millions of dollars per year. , The marine industry also suffers losses amounting to billions of dollars due to bacterial colonization and biofilm formation . Microbial induced corrosion also causes industries multibillion dollar annual losses .…”
