In this study, the influence of silicon nitride (Si3N4) and zirconia (ZrO2) ceramics was examined on the titanium alloy using the pulsed electric current sintering technique to investigate the microstructural behavior, densification, and nanomechanical properties of these composites. Si3N4 and ZrO2 were dispersed in Ti-6Al-4 V at a functional pressure of 50 MPa, a sintering temperature of 1200 °C, a heating rate of 100 °C/min, and a holding time of 10 min. The ternary composite samples were prepared viz, Cs1 (Ti6Al4V-3 vol.% Si3N4-15 vol.% ZrO2), Cs2 (Ti6Al4V-3 vol.% Si3N4-10 vol.% ZrO2), and Cs3 (Ti6Al4V-3 vol.% Si3N4-5 vol.% ZrO2). The bulk morphology of the composites was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with EDS, and the phase contents were identified with an X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The relative density results for the tri-composites showed that the Cs1 sample recorded the highest at 99.94%, producing a fully dense sintered composite. However, there was a drop in the relative density of composites Cs2 and Cs3, recording 97.73% and 97.11%, respectively, comparable to the unreinforced Ti-6Al-4 V alloy with 98.65%. The nanoindentation examination conducted for the trio-composites showed linear mechanical responses/improvement, with Vickers hardness, from 589.31 to 865.70 MPa; nano hardness, from 6.466 to 9.441 GPa, and elastic modulus, from 113.52 to 185.95 GPa.

To understand mechanical behavior of metastable metal-matrix composites, Cu@Ag core–shell powders of two compositions, 51:49 and 80:20 (Cu:Ag in wt%), were compacted by spark plasma sintering. The microstructures of these metastable metal-matrix composites are characterized by single spherical particulates of pure Cu in the matrix of pure Ag in the former case while by aggregates of Cu particulates in Ag matrix in the latter one. The plastic deformation showed enhancement of the ultimate tensile strength compared to both pure component metals by a factor of ca. 3. It is shown that a part of plastic deformation can be correlated by a logarithmic dependence but a possibility to apply a polynomial (quadratic) correlation is suggested. As expected, the shape of the particulate changes during plastic deformation and depends on the level and type of the plastic deformation. A model is proposed showing that this dependence is of a hyperbolic character.

The near-α Ti–6Al–4Zr–4Nb (wt pct) alloy is a recently developed alloy with potential for aerospace applications. This study evaluates the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti–6Al–4Zr–4Nb produced by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The SPS samples sintered in the α + β regions exhibited equiaxed α with a neighboring thin β phase. Above the β-transus temperature, the α/β lamellar structure formed, allowing control of the grain size (100 ~ 200 μm). The compressive strength and the creep property of the SPS samples were compared with the LBPDed and the forged samples. The compressive strength of the SPS sample was lower than that of the LPBFed sample but similar to the forged sample. The SPS samples exhibited longer creep rupture life (2220 hours) than LPBFed samples (1730 hours), but shorter than the forged sample (4109 hours). The creep deformation mechanism of the lamellar structure in the SPS sample was dislocation creep.
