A Critical Assessment of Micellization of Sodium Dodecyl Benzene Sulfonate (SDBS) and Its Interaction with Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) and Hydrophobically Modified Polymers, JR 400 and LM 200

Abstract: The self-aggregation of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and its solution behaviors have been critically assessed by conductometric, tensiometric, spectrophotometric, flourimetric, and calorimetric methods. The interfacial adsorption behaviors of SDBS have also been assessed critically. Based on the isothermal titration calorimetric (ITC) measurements, the thermodynamics of micellization of SDBS have been examined in the light of both "mass action" and "pseudophase" principles. A method of simulation ha… Show more

“…S1, and these values agree well with those reported in literature [34][35][36] (Table 3). For surfactants in the presence of aqueous solutions of high molecular weight polymers, c decreases as a function of log [surfactant] and the first plateau in the slope (supplementary material Fig.…”

“…The C n TABs showed exothermicity while MEGA 10 showed endothermicity of micellization at 303 K. The enthalpograms showed transition from endothermicity to exothermicity in enthalpy of micellization ( H m ) with increase in the content of C n TAB in the mixture. The Sigmoidal Boltzmann equation (SBE) was used for the evaluation of CMC and enthalpy of micellization ( H m ) following the procedure described earlier [22,23]. In the illustration, the equimolar mixture representation had low H m and the SBE fitting was poor.…”

“…Due to unfavorable contact between the hydrophobic groups and water, these polymers have a tendency for self-aggregation and association with surfactants. Water soluble cationic celluloses and other biopolymers have been used in such studies (Burke & Palepu, 2001;Burke, Palepu, Hait, & Moulik, 2003;Dan, Ghosh, & Moulik, 2009a;Guillemet & Piculell, 1995;Hait, Majhi, Blume, & Moulik, 2003;.…”
