This experiment examines how the timing of the expression of affect influences the performance of decision-making groups. Forty-nine four-person groups were instructed either to express affect at the outset of a meeting and again later if needed, to delay affect expression until after alternative solutions were generated, to avoid affect expression, or were given no instructions regarding affect expression. Judges found the highest quality decisions and most diverse alternatives to be produced by groups that delayed affect expression. These groups were also seen by members to be more effective, energetic, able to consider a wider range of alternatives and ideas, and less likely to evaluate their progress than others. The results indicate two dysfunctional consequences of the early expression of affect: a reduction in group energy and a narrowing of the range of accepted ideas. The practical implications of the study are discussed, as is the failure of certain groups to carry out an experimental manipulation requiring them to avoid completely the discussion of affect in their decision making.The propensity of decision problems to

La présente recherche s’est donnée comme but d’identifier, de valider et de pondérer, par l’analyse hiérarchique multi-attribut, des indicateurs de la qualité des soins relatifs à l’ empowerment de patients atteints d’une maladie complexe à caractère chronique, ou de leur soignant naturel. Cette étude méthodologique s’est réalisée dans le cadre d’un suivi systématique de clientèles et a pris comme appui théorique le modèle de qualité de Donabedian (1980) et celui de l’ empowerment de Zimmerman (1995), tout en s’inspirant des valeurs qui sous-tendent la pratique infirmière décrites dans le modèle de promotion de la santé d’Allen (1977). Deux groupes d’ informateurs clés professionnels et un groupe d’informateurs clés non professionnels ont été formés. À l’aide de la technique DELPHI et d’entrevues, l’étude a permis à la fois 1) l’émergence progressive d’un modèle d’évaluation de la qualité des soins comprenant 239 éléments (12 attributs principaux, 75 attributs secondaires et 152 indicateurs), 2) sa validation et 3) sa pondération par des experts. La discussion tient compte de considérations d’ordre théorique, empirique et méthodologique.
