A County‐Level Assessment of Ground Water Contamination by Pesticides

Abstract: A pesticide screening model was integrated with a geographic information system (GIS) for evaluating the ground water vulnerability to pesticide contamination in Albemarle County, Virginia. The attenuation factor (AF). an index of pesticide mass emission from the vadose zone, was used to evaluate the relative contamination potential of 70 pesticides used in the county. Results for only three pesticides—atrazine, dicamba, and lindane—are discussed in this paper. Spatial (land use, soils, and hydrogeology) and r… Show more

“…In this study, DRASTIC was used together with modified DRASTIC to assess groundwater vulnerability of the Chunnakam aquifer system in Jaffna. This method is considered as a standardized method for evaluating groundwater vulnerability to contamination and has been used elsewhere (Fritch et al 2000;Shukla et al 2000;Al-Zabet 2002). The DRASTIC method has also been applied in many different climates, including Sri Lanka (Babiker et al 2005;Werz and Hötzl 2007;Jayasekera et al 2011).…”

“…It is a standardized method for evaluating groundwater vulnerability to contamination and has been used in the USA (Fritch et al 2000;Shukla et al 2000) and many other regions in the world (Kim and Hamm 1999;Al-Zabet 2002). The DRASTIC method has also been applied in humid climates (Babiker et al 2005) and semi-arid to arid climates (Werz and Hötzl 2007).…”

“…The world's most precious natural resource -water -is being threatened by numerous contaminants, resulting in a water contamination crisis with both local and national implications [1][2][3]. Several conventional methods of water treatment exist including filtration, chemical precipitation, ion exchange adsorption, electro deposition, and membrane systems and as such they have found certain practical applications.…”
