The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed how education is delivered worldwide. The resultant rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms, has extensively impacted universities and other higher education organizations around the world. One approach to support this change in education delivery is the use of virtual simulation approaches. Our team at SimXSpace has piloted a virtual workshop using Zoom, an online video-conferencing platform, and virtual simulated persons (SPs) to support communication and interpersonal skills among learners. The main objective of the pilot virtual workshop was to develop and implement the SP methodology remotely via the Zoom platform (Zoom Video Communications, San Jose, California) and to evaluate its effectiveness as an immersive environment for simulation. The virtual workshop involved four instructors who intend to implement virtual SPs within their courses, two workshop facilitators, and two SPs. The workshop was conducted synchronously using Zoom features. The workshop followed a predefined structure and was completed as planned. Outcomes suggest that remote simulation delivery using virtual SPs and delivered online via Zoom is feasible and provides an effective environment in which to conduct SP methodology to teach communication and interpersonal skills. The findings suggest that remote simulation and virtual SPs can support experiential education and provide an effective and engaging learning environment. The virtual workshop was successful and laid a foundation for future online training programs for the use of SP methodology. Moreover, it formed an effective outline for subsequent iterations of this virtual training workshop and prompted discussion of plans for future workshops with various programs across a pan-university context.

Introducción: La simulación en docencia en ciencias de la salud, permite integrar conocimientos y desarrollar habilidades previo a la práctica clínica, logrando competencias complejas. Además, permite a los estudiantes implementar un cuidado personalizado, pensar críticamente y mejorar la confianza en sus capacidades. Objetivo: evaluar la contribución de la simulación de la atención del parto, en la adquisición de una habilidad esencial para alumnos que optan a desempeñarse en el área obstétrica. Materiales y métodos: se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica basada en datos PubMed que incluyó las palabras claves simulation, labor y education y sus equivalentes en español. Se excluyeron los títulos relacionados con “anestesia en obstetricia” y “hemorragia postparto”. Se revisaron investigaciones observacionales, descriptivos, revisiones narrativas y sistemáticas, ensayos controlados, estudios cuasi experimentales y prospectivos. Resultados: Se seleccionaron 50 artículos que contenían al menos una de las palabras clave y estaban relacionados con “obstetricia” o “parto”, logrando acceder a 46 de ellos. La simulación de parto es una estrategia educativa exitosa, que permite a los alumnos sentirse más confiados, mejora el trabajo en equipo, incrementa el grado de conocimiento, mejora habilidades y permite cuidar a las usuarias sin riesgos. Conclusiones: la simulación es un método educativo que permite a los estudiantes practicar lo aprendido en clases antes de iniciar la experiencia clínica, disminuyendo el riesgo de la atención de pacientes por alumnos. Se recomienda el uso de la simulación en la docencia de atención del parto vaginal como una herramienta exitosa que contribuye en la adquisición de habilidades clínicas.

Numerous forecasts suggest that professional-competence development depends on human encounters. Interaction between organizations, tasks, and individual providers influence human behaviour, affect organizations' or systems' performance, and are a key component of professional-competence development. Further, insufficient or ineffective communication between professionals is deemed a contributing factor to adverse events worldwide. This underscores the need to provide educators with the tools and education to embed methods in their teaching that will enable learners to effectively intervene in highly charged interpersonal situations and high-risk scenarios; these concerns highlight the value of realistic simulated-experiential approaches, such as the one proposed in this project. The first phase of this project involved conducting a three-day experiential workshop developed at a Canadian university to provide educators with knowledge and skills to work and effectively utilize simulators, enhancing pedagogical classroom practices for teaching undergraduate learners. This workshop's development resulted in numerous benefits. Participation in the workshop provided educators with opportunities for meaningful reflection on their teaching practice and the ability to apply this insight to optimize student learning. It provided theatre students, recruited as simulators as part of this interdisciplinary initiative, to expand their experiences and this will lead to an expanded practicum course for their program. There is now a group of simulators available to educators across the university to include in classroom activities, and lastly there are further iterations of this workshop available for faculty development. This paper reflects on the workshop experiences and the feedback obtained from the participants. Formal and informal feedback obtained provides an understanding of the participants' experiences.
