A corticostriatal pathway mediating self-efficacy enhancement

Abstract: Forming positive beliefs about one’s ability to perform challenging tasks, often termed self-efficacy, is fundamental to motivation and emotional well-being. Self-efficacy crucially depends on positive social feedback, yet people differ in the degree to which they integrate such feedback into self-beliefs (i.e., positive bias). While diminished positive bias of this sort is linked to mood and anxiety, the neural processes by which positive feedback on public performance enhances self-efficacy remain unclear. T… Show more

“…Concurrently, some scholars believe that self-efficacy positively and constructively influences emotional regulation abilities. High self-efficacy can enhance the function of the prefrontal cortex, improving an individual’s cognitive control over emotional responses, enabling a more rational assessment of situations and adopting appropriate coping strategies when faced with emotional challenges [ 64 ]. Self-efficacy may modulate the activity of the amygdala, reducing the overreaction to threat information and thereby mitigating the harm of negative emotions to the organism [ 65 ].…”

“…2019 ). The link between striatal responses and belief uncertainty may be an additionally informative step, and lays the foundations to maximize the efficacy of psychological therapies intended to improve cognitive flexibility and the adoption of more adaptive, less pathologically-negative beliefs ( Shany et al. 2022 ).…”

“…For instance, it has been stated that PA directly influences self-related functions, physical capabilities, and cognitive functions. Moreover, numerous studies have investigated the effectiveness of PA therapies in enhancing cognitive health, a crucial element for successful aging and overall wellbeing among the elderly [12][13][14]. There is a well-documented correlation between psychological well-being and PA [15], as well as between PA and the reduction of psychological distress throughout life [3,16].…”
