A correlation analysis of HHV infection and its predictive factors in an HIV‐seropositive population in Yunnan, China

Abstract: Human herpesviruses (HHVs) have a particularly high prevalence in certain high-risk populations and cause increased morbidity and mortality in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Screening and treating subclinical HHV infections reduce human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection incidence, disease progression, and transmission. However, there are few studies on HHVs, HIV coinfection rates, and their related risk factors. We aimed to clarify the prevalence of all eight HHVs in peripheral b… Show more

“…Herpesviruses can cause CNS diseases during primary infection or reactivation, with a high prevalence in high-risk populations, especially PLWHA ( 17 , 18 ). These viruses are strongly associated with serious infections, and their reactivation is almost always linked to negative outcomes.…”

“…These viruses are strongly associated with serious infections, and their reactivation is almost always linked to negative outcomes. Therefore, an early and accurate diagnosis is essential to identify this viral group ( 18 , 19 ). In our study, herpesvirus accounted for 12.2% of opportunistic CNS infections in PLWHA, which is lower than reported in the literature.…”

“…People living with HIV: HIV and HSV-2 infections have similar risk factors and tend to have a higher coexistence rate in special population groups. The seroprevalence of HSV-2 in HIV-positive individuals was 65.3 % in a hospital in Yunnan, China from 2015 to 2016 and 61.5 % among patients attending the HIV clinic in Kolkata, India from 2012 to 2013 [18,19]. Data from a tertiary care hospital in Delhi, India during 2010-2013 revealed a HSV-2 seroprevalence of 39.9 % (95 % CI 33.…”

“…The reactivation of these viruses, some of which are associated with increased mortality (Ren et al, 2020 ), has also been detected in astronauts. Besides the cold-sore-causing HSV-1 (Crucian et al, 2016a ), the reactivation of other herpesviruses such as EBV (Payne et al, 1999 ), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV; Vuong et al, 2000 ), and VZV has been observed in astronauts before with mild symptoms (Mehta et al, 2004 ).…”
