Mastery of the art of crafting online reviews and responses is essential as a valuable additional tool for enhancing learners’ English proficiency in specialised contexts. This study aims to: 1) Examine the formality levels in crafting reviews and responses; 2) Explore face-threatening acts utilised in reviews and politeness strategies employed in responses; and 3) Uncover moves and steps in composing reviews and responses. Data was collected from the Top 25 Hotels in the World in 2022 according to Tripadvisor.com. Six distinct corpora were formed, comprising positive, negative, and mixed reviews, along with corresponding responses, resulting in 87,973 tokens. Findings show reviewers leaned towards casual language (85.87%), while respondents used a consultative style (82.67%) in their responses. The shift from casual to consultative occurred most frequently (70.67%). For politeness, admiration (73.07%) and expressions of complaints/reprimands (64.53%) were common in reviews. In responses, strategies like offering, promising, or giving gifts (72.00%) and apologising and begging for forgiveness (50.40%) were prevalent. Reviews used three moves and ten steps, while responses employed six moves and 16 steps. These insights can be integrated into ESP classrooms to enhance review and response writing skills effectively.

A Contrastive Study of English Introductions of Chinese and British Museums in Move Distribution and Readability

Based on a designed move analysis model, we manually annotated 83 English introductions of Chinese museums (EICMs) and 127 English introductions of British museums (EIBMs), and used SPSS to do the significance test on the distribution of moves. The result shows that the moves of Identification, Location, History, Evaluation, Additional Museum Attractions, and Summary in EICMs occur significantly more frequently, while the moves of Highlight, Action Soliciting, and Support occur significantly less frequently. Besides, the study also investigated the readability of the introductions of the two groups of museums. The result shows that EICMs’ overall readability is significantly lower, especially in Narrativity, Syntactic Simplicity, and Deep Cohesion.Those results show that EICMs are more of informational text, while EIBMs are more of promotional text. Choices of narrative person, substance and function words, and use of causal and intentional particles may lead to the difference in readability. Contemporary museums have long since moved on from the stage where objects were left to “speak for themselves”. Museum introductions’ content selection and language expression should be targeted at their readers. The findings are expected to provide a reference for the writing and translation of museum introductions, and attract more visitors to Chinese museums.

Transformation of Higher Education Through Institutional Online Spaces

The marketization of higher education, which is becoming competitive due to the growing number of tertiary institutions, has attracted the attention of scholars. Previous studies have focused on promotional strategies in institutions' websites, prospectuses, and social media, while little attention has been paid to promotional emails. This study, therefore, complements existing studies by examining the rhetoric in promotional emails of tertiary institutions within the context of student enrollment. The data includes 80 emails sent by 20 higher education institutions to prospective students and were subjected to discourse analysis using Bhatia's genre analysis. The findings reveal three move structures: self-promotion, incentive, and invitation through rhetorical strategies of the institution's achievements, scholarship opportunities, and event participation using linguistic resources that indicate intentions to persuade potential applicants. The findings show how tertiary institutions attempt to build friendly relationships with prospective students through persuasion.
