The present investigation was undertaken to study the parasitic infections in herbivores kept at Mahendra Choudhury Zoological Park, Chhatbir in Punjab, India. The occurrence and intensity of gastrointestinal parasitic load in 169 animals of 16 different herbivore species belonging to the families Cervidae, Bovidae, Hippopotamidae, Elephantidae, Rhinocerotidae and Equidae was determined by standard qualitative and quantitative parasitological techniques. The overall occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites based on 389 samples examined for helmithic eggs/oocysts of protozoa was found to be 25.71 per cent. The various parasitic eggs/oocyst detected were of strongyles, amphistomes, Trichuris spp. and Eimeria spp. The most commonly detected parasitic infection (89%) was of strongyles followed by Trichuris spp., Eimeria spp. and amphisotomes. Mixed infection was noticed in majority of the herbivores. The intensity of eggs of different parasites in various species of animals ranged from 50-4200 eggs per gram (epg). It was found that treatment of animals with appropriate drugs based on the species of parasites present in these animals was reported to be 100 per cent effective in majority of cases based on reduction in faecal egg count which reached zero by day three post treatment while in some groups it was reached by day five post treatment. No re-occurrence of parasitic infection was reported till day 55 post treatment.

SummaryThe Viverridae is a family of nocturnal carnivores including civets, genets and African linsangs. While a list of known organisms isolated from a species is an essential tool for population management, this review represents the first attempt to collate published reports of organisms isolated from viverrids. A wide range of organisms, including 11 viruses, eight bacterial species, one internal arthropod species, representatives from eight genera of protozoan, 21 genera of nematode, seven genera of cestode, eight genera of trematode and six genera of external arthropod (mites, ticks and louse), have been reported in literature spanning over a century of research. Many of these are capable of infecting multiple hosts, including humans. This is of concern given the anthropogenic factors that bring humans and domestic species into close contact with viverrids, facilitating transmission and spillover of organisms between groups. These factors include trade in viverrids for human consumption, captive management in zoos, rescue centres or on commercial breeding farms, and the increasing overlap of free-ranging viverrid distribution and human settlement.

Parasitos ocorrem praticamente em todos os níveis tróficos e sua transmissão geralmente pode depender da presença de hospedeiros intermediários, paratênicos e definitivos dentro de um ecossistema. Entretanto, altas densidades de parasitos nos indivíduos podem expandir os danos em populações e ocasionar endemias. O presente estudo analisou a fauna parasitária a partir de exames coproparasitológicos de Puma concolor, Puma yagouaroundi e Leopardus pardalis, de material coletado em trilhas da Floresta Nacional de Três Barras, Santa Catarina, Brasil. Foram realizadas 10 coletas entre os meses de agosto de 2013 a fevereiro de 2014, e as espécies de felídeos foram identificadas através da análise do padrão microestrutural dos pêlos-guarda nas amostras fecais. Os exames coproparasitológicos foram realizados em 45 amostras pelos métodos de Willis e Hoffmann. Todas as amostras fecais estavam positivas para parasitos, demonstrando a presença de protozoários, nematódeos, trematódeos, cestódeos e ácaros. Foram identificadas 22 formas parasitárias em amostras de L. pardalis, sete em P. concolor e oito em P. yagouaroundi. Alguns parasitos identificados são comumente observados em felídeos, outros são provenientes da fauna parasitária das presas ingeridas, além de ovos de parasitos comuns em animais domésticos, demonstrando a presença da ação antrópica na área de estudo, o que pode ser considerado um agravante à situação de risco desses felídeos ameaçados de extinção.
