A controlled study of fluoxetine and cognitive-behavioural counselling in the treatment of postnatal depression

Abstract: Both fluoxetine and cognitive-behavioural counselling given as a course of therapy are effective treatments for non-psychotic depression in postnatal women. After an initial session of counselling, additional benefit results from either fluoxetine or further counselling but there seems to be no advantage in receiving both. The choice of treatment may therefore be made by the women themselves.

“…The mainstay of treatment has been antidepressant medication but women are reluctant to take antidepressants, 60 as they are concerned about their safety when breastfeeding and the potential for side effects to disturb their interaction with their infant. 105 It has been reported that fish consumption and omega-3 status after childbirth are not associated with PND, 106 but there is still interest in exploring the role of omega-3 fatty acids in PND, alone or combined with supportive psychotherapy.…”

“…On the one hand, detailed interval treatment records were not collected. However, even brief psychotherapy or antidepressant use has been found to be effective (Appleby et al 1997); therefore, detailed treatment information is, arguably, not necessary.…”
