A controlled comparison of sertraline and fluoxetine in acute and continuation treatment of major depression

Abstract: In a double-blind multicentre trial in patients with major depression, the efficacy and the tolerability of sertraiine were compared with those of fluoxetine, during an eight-week acute treatment phase followed by a 24-week continuation treatment phase in treatment responders.A total of 165 patients who met DSM III-R criteria for moderate to severe major depression were randomized to receive either sertraline or fluoxetine for short-term and continuation treatment with initial daily dosages of either 50 mg of … Show more

“…Geddes et al (2003) in a meta-analysis of 31 randomized trials-few finding supports significant differences between individual SSRI maintenance therapies. Van Moffaert et al (1995) demonstrated that sertraline and fluoxetine had similar antidepressant efficacy and tolerability for continuation treatment. Other studies showed no significant differences between sertraline and fluvoxamine (Franchini et al, 1997(Franchini et al, , 2000 or between paroxetine and duloxetine (Perahia et al, 2006).…”

“…Indeed, studies have shown that sertraline does provide some of these advantages relative to other SSRIs (Hindmarch et al, 1990;Meara et al, 1995;Thakore et al, 1995;Van Moffaert et al, 1995;Bisserbe et al, 1996;Latimer et al, 1996;Newhouse et al, 1996;Price et al, 1996;Shulman et al, 1996;Zanardi et al, 1996;Hauser and Zesiewicz, 1997;Lane, 1997;MacKay et al, 1997;Mulholland et al, 1997;Waldinger, 1997;Agren et al, 1998;Lane, 1998).…”

“…Four head-to-head trials (five publications) provide evidence of moderate strength that the overall efficacy of second-generation antidepressants for maintaining remission does not differ between drugs studied in these trials (Table 1) (13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Comparisons included duloxetine with paroxetine (17), fluoxetine with sertraline (13), fluvoxamine with sertraline (14,15), and trazodone with venlafaxine (16).…”
