A contribution towards checklist of fungus gnats (Diptera, Diadocidiidae, Ditomyiidae, Bolitophilidae, Keroplatidae, Mycetophilidae) in Georgia, Transcaucasia

Abstract: The fungus gnats of Georgia are studied based on 2682 specimens collected from 57 localities during 2011–2019. Altogether, 245 species are recorded including four species of Bolitophilidae, three species of Diadocidiidae, two species of Ditomyiidae, 34 species of Keroplatidae and 202 species of Mycetophilidae. 230 and 188 species are recorded from Georgia and the whole of Transcaucasia for the first time, respectively. “…Docosia caucasica sp. n. was represented by a single specimen, which is relatively common as 33% of Georgian species are so far known from singletons [27]. Moreover, in the Malaise trap sample containing the holotype, seven out of the eight additional Mycetophilidae species were also represented by only a single specimen.…”

“…However, in other regions of the world, Mycetophilidae are even more superficially studied and/or have been almost neglected for a long time, as is the case in Transcaucasia. The first checklist of Mycetophilidae in Georgia was published only recently, still representing probably less than half of the actual local diversity, which in turn undoubtedly includes a substantial number of undescribed species [27]. Therefore, discovery of a new species from the Lesser Caucasus in Georgia is unsurprising.…”

“…Neoempheria brevilineata has been found in Russia for the first time. This insufficiently known species was originally described by Okada (1939) from Hokkaido (Japan), and subsequently recorded from Georgia (Adjara, Imereti) (Kurina, 2021). Note.…”

“…cies richness of this group is expected to be very high. Proof of this can be found in the excellent paper published recently by Kurina [Kurina, 2021], which quotes as many as 246 species of fungus gnats from Georgia, the neighbouring Transcaucasian country. By comparison, only scattered regional data are included in two major works on the fungus gnats of Russia by Zaitzev [Zaitzev, 1994[Zaitzev, , 2003.…”
