A contribution to the establishment of diagnostic reference levels in CT

Abstract: CT has become the major source of population exposure to diagnostic X-rays. CT dose index (CTDI) and dose-length product (DLP) have been proposed as the appropriate dose quantities for the establishment of diagnostic reference levels for optimizing patient exposure. Dose measurements on 27 CT scanners in Northern Greece involving six routine CT examinations have been performed in order to compare their performance with the currently proposed European reference dose values and to produce a preliminary set of da… Show more

“…[12] The dose parameters recommended in the guidelines are weighed CT dose index (CTDI w ) and volumetric CT dose index (CTDI v ) for a single section and dose length product (DLP) for the entire examination. [13] The purpose of our study is to establish nationwide “Diagnostic Reference Level" for CT scanners for select procedures viz., head, chest, and abdomen. The first step towards setting a national DRL is to arrive at regional DRL for which the entire nation has been divided into five zones namely south, north, east, west, and center.…”

“…Hatziioannou et al 21 large number of single slice axial and helical scanners in Greece in an attempt to verify the usefulness of the proposed EU diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) 11,13 . Given the types of scanners involved in their survey, and major differences in the clinical protocols utilized, direct comparison with the present multi-slice work is hardly valid.…”

“…These examinations were specifically selected as this is the first stage of a larger study aimed at optimisation for CT trunk examinations in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, a recent study demonstrated that CT scans in the trunk region can result in higher effective doses, reaching up to a maximal value of 15 mSv (18) . Survey booklets were designed and piloted randomly in four hospitals to check for appropriateness; these centres were not included in the main survey.…”
